Former undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez is widely regarded as one of the pound-for-pound best boxers of this era, and for good reason. However, even the most formidable athletes cannot escape the inevitability of time. Canelo himself seems to acknowledge this reality, as he recently revealed when he plans to hang up his gloves.

This is not the first time, the Mexican superstar has contemplated retirement, and a latest report from Boxing Kingdom suggests he is sticking to that timeline. This comes after Canelo was linked to a potential fight against Terence Crawford in September in Las Vegas, which had fans on the edge of their seats. However, the retirement bombshell seems to have left everyone shaken.

When is Canelo Alvarez retiring?

‘Cinnamon’ recently appeared in The Ring Podcast, where Boxing Kingdom claims Canelo made the announcement. “Canelo Alvarez has stated that he would like to retire in 2029 when he’s 38 years old,” Boxing Kingdom reported. Interestingly, last year in December, Canelo made some similar claims while in a conversation with Hugo Sanchez.

“From the age of 28-29, this is the age where I have felt best,” Alvarez said during the show. “I have always said that at 37 years old is a good age to enjoy what I have done with my family, other things in my career and that’s what I say; but I said I would debut at 18 and I did it at 15.” Regardless of his plans, fans had a lot to say about Canelo’s retirement.

Fan predicts ‘gimmick fights’ are on the horizon

With three or four more years of boxing left for Canelo, fans seem to have a wide variety of expectations from the legend. One user speculated that Canelo Alvarez could go on for even longer. “He can probably go on for longer … it’s the taller bigger fighters who get problems first,” the user wrote. However, boxers fighting past their time have never ended positively, unless the fighter is George Foreman.

The next user accused Canelo Alvarez of taking gimmick fights. “So, four more years of gimmick fights?” the user asked. Canelo has attracted much criticism due to his recent choice of opponents, which includes Jermell Charlo, Jaime Munguia, and Edgar Berlanga.

Another user claimed regardless of Canelo’s plans, he would suffer more losses before retiring. “He’s slowing down now, he’ll pick up some losses on the way,” the user commented. However, that depends upon his choice of opponents in the future, especially since his recent choices don’t seem to have what it takes.

Someone else felt there was one opponent Canelo Alvarez would fight before retiring. “He is about to fight Crawford three times and retire 😂,” the user commented. But the Crawford fight hasn’t been confirmed yet, and there’s a chance it may never happen.

Meanwhile, the next user felt Canelo Alvarez would retire way before 2029. “He’s for sure gon retire (way) b4 that lol,” the user commented. Canelo is currently 34, so with three or four more years ahead of him, there’s little reason to believe age will slow him down significantly.

That said, fans clearly don’t seem all too bothered by Canelo’s retirement announcement. What they really seem to care about is the Terence Crawford fight. What do you think about Canelo’s retirement?
