Trainer of the year, Eddy Reynoso, and the WBC recently announced Canelo Alvarez will be moving to cruiserweight. There, he will face the current WBC cruiserweight champion, Ilunga Junior Makabu.

This announcement has sparked a series of debates and arguments in the boxing community; while many believe Canelo has next to no chance at surviving against a cruiserweight, there are also many who strongly believe the Mexican champ will be a force to be reckoned with.

However, his opponent, Ilunga Makabu, thinks Canelo is making a mistake. He has now promised to KO him.

“I think Canelo is making a big mistake, which he is going to regret, because I`ll walk away with all the [titles]. Canelo wants to prove to people that he can do better than others and I am quite prepared to let Canelo try for this dream”

“but I’ve also got my own story to write down. Yes, this is boxing. I lost to Tony Bellew, but I came back. Now I’m telling you…. 100%, I will knock out Canelo,” said Makabu.

Ilunga Makabu has a lot of respect for Canelo Alvarez

In a recent interview after WBC’s huge announcement, Ilunga Makabu shared his thoughts on fighting boxing’s pound-for-pound king. Based on his comments, he seems extremely excited to welcome a title challenge from the 4-division champion.

It does not seem like Makabu is underestimating Alvarez; he even acknowledged him as “the best boxer on the planet.”
