Canelo Alvarez Makes His Pick for the Best Defensive Boxer

The No. 1 pound for pound fighter, Canelo Alvarez, is set to take on the WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol on 7th May 2022 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. In the event, the four-division champion will look to conquer the light heavyweight division as well. Canelo will be coming off a victory against Caleb Plant.

The Mexican sat down with DAZN ahead of his fight for an entertaining video called 10 rounds where they ask him ten different questions.

Canelo Alvarez names the fighter with the best defense

One of the questions asked in the video was who is the fighter with the best defense. Even though Canelo has faced one of the greatest boxers of all time, Floyd Mayweather, he replied to this by naming “Gilberto Roman” as the fighter with the best defense. Furthermore, he stated why he dubs Roman the best.

According to the Mexican, Roman has an incredible defense and was able to avoid every shot thrown at him. He stated, “Gilberto Roman. He had a great defense. He’d stay on the ropes and wouldn’t get hit by a single punch.”

‘The Cinnamon’ revealed the unique ability Roman possessed, which impressed Canelo so much that he deemed Roman’s defense the best.

Canelo has even faced the five-division champion who has mastered the art of hit-and-not-get-hit. However, he doesn’t pick Mayweather as his best-ever defensive fighter.

Who is Gilberto Roman?

Roman was a two-time WBC and lineal super flyweight champion. He had a nickname called the ‘Cachanilla’. Moreover, Roman won his first super flyweight championship after he defeated the Japanese Jiro Watanabe via decision. Additionally, he had a decent boxing record of 54-6-1.

The story of the Mexican great is not all happy-go-lucky as he met with a tragic end at the age of 28 years. Roman was involved in a car accident on 27th June 1990, which resulted in the death of the Mexican boxer.
