The year 2022 was all set for Canelo Alvarez. He was most likely to face Russian pugilist Dmitry Bivol and later Gennady Golovkin. But things changed for the Mexican when Bivol registered the biggest upset by outclassing him in exciting anticipation. The unexpected loss led to the speculations about whether Canelo favors a rematch to settle scores with Bivol or go for a historic trilogy.

According to the latest update, the champ is moving away from the Bivol fight to face his old rival GGG.

Michael Benson from Talk Sport reported it on Twitter.

He wrote, “Canelo Alvarez has now indicated that he will take the Gennady Golovkin trilogy fight next, then look to rematch Dmitry Bivol. Canelo would be moving back down to super-middleweight and defending his undisputed WBA, WBC, IBF & WBO world titles vs GGG on Sept 17th.”

This is the most probable thing that Canelo can do now. The confirmation from Canelo’s end will certainly add volume to this big story.

However, recently in a press conference in Mexico, Canelo hinted at this. He said, “Surely yes. We already had that contract, that deal so we have to continue what we started.”

Furthermore, he added, “And I think they are the two most important fights in boxing. The fight with Golovkin and the rematch with Bivol because unfortunately we lost, but that doesn’t mean that I’m not going to try again.”

This means Alvarez is not dropping the plan of fighting in a weight division, which naturally does not fit with Canelo’s stature.

The rivalry between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin

Canelo Alvarez and ‘Triple G‘ are undoubtedly the greatest technician in the middle-weight division. The pair had squared off twice before but the close contest between them demanded a final clash for greatness.

The first time they met was in 2017. The event was spectacular. It was so close that fight ended in a controversial draw. Dissatisfied with the verdict, the pair met a second time in 2018.

The battle was tough again. Neither of the two has clear dominance. But Canelo had a slight edge over Golovkin on scorecards so he was declared the winner by decision.

Since then, Golovkin is repeatedly insisting on a third fight with Canelo.

As of now, they both are on the same terms. This shows that they will certainly meet this year in the ring.
