Canelo Alvarez’s Sanctioned Fight With Russian Opponent Draws ‘Shameful’ Comments From WBC Prez

The approval of the most awaited clash between pound-for-pound king Canelo Alvarez and the Russian light heavyweight stalwart Dmitry Bivol drew the ire of critics.

Notably, a while ago, WBC, including other major sanctioning bodies, had announced that they will not sanction any boxing championships in Russia amid heavy tensions between Russia and Ukraine. The President of WBC, Mauricio Sulaiman, took to social media platforms and made it public.

The post comprises an emblem of the four major organizations.

Meanwhile, after becoming the undisputed super-middleweight champion, the pound-for-pound king Canelo Alvarez is hell-bent on garnering more accolades. This time, he plans to do it in the light heavyweight division. In doing so, he will be facing the current WBA (Super) light-heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol.

However, the recent confirmation of the clash between Canelo Alvarez and Dmitry Bivol that will land on May 7 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada contradicts the stance taken by WBC.

BoxingScene.com reported on Twitter that WBC president Maurício Sulaiman has backtracked from his official declaration.

They quoted WBC president, “I’m glad Canelo-Bivol is taking place, Boxing is far above politics.”

Meanwhile, this did not sit well with the boxing fans.

Reacting to WBC President’s comments, one Fan wrote, “Shameful.”
