Canelo Alvarez was once hailed as the biggest star in boxing, especially Mexican boxing. However, some events seem to have dulled his reputation in the sport. The Mexican Superstar is about to enter the ring against Jaime Munguia, promoted by Canelo’s estranged promoter Oscar De La Hoya, on May 4, but all people can talk about is a clash between him and David Benavidez

While appearing in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, the undisputed super middleweight champion did not hold back on his critics. Speaking about his beef with Oscar De La Hoya, Canelo blatantly called him a coward. Meanwhile, he gave his final verdict on fans demanding a fight against the ‘Mexican Monster’ Benavidez.

Canelo Alvarez claims Oscar De La Hoya is famous because of his “stupid” remarks

Not long ago, the first press conference for the Canelo vs. Munguia fight transpired in Los Angeles. While the presser didn’t see a squabble between the former promoter and fighter duo, De La Hoya later claimed it was extremely boring, and that’s how most of Canelo’s fights are like. So, when the reporter from the Los Angeles Times probed Canelo about the remark, the undisputed champion unleashed a verbal attack on the famed promoter.

Questioning why Oscar didn’t bring up the same thing during the press conference, Canelo said, “He does not have the courage to say it right there at the press conference.” He later added, “I think it’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen in my life and that’s what Oscar is. Oscar relies on nothing more than talking stupid things and that’s why people put a lot of attention [on] him, but in his company he does nothing more than [say] stupid things.”

Moreover, when asked about his thoughts on people demanding a fight against David Benavidez, Canelo claimed he is in a position where he could do whatever he likes. “The truth is I’ve always fought with those who people say I don’t want to fight… If you look at my career, I’ve already fought with many hall of famers, with many undefeated, with champions… So, I am in a position where I can do whatever I want to do,” said Canelo Alvarez. Meanwhile, ‘Cinnamon’ revealed why he decided to fight a Mexican.

Alvarez thinks the fight would be good for Mexico

Previously, the Guadalajara native had claimed he wouldn’t want to fight a fellow Mexican boxer, something people claimed was a way of ducking David Benavidez. The same suspicion was later intensified when Canelo, despite his claim, opted to face fellow Mexican Jaime Munguia.

So, while appearing in an interview with TMZ Sports, he cleared the air about his decision. “You know it is what it is. I represent Mexico, that’s why I try to not fight Mexican fighters. But, at the end of the day, this fight is going to be good for Mexico. So, two Mexicans in the Cinco de Mayo weekend in Las Vegas. Everybody’s watching us. So, I’m very proud about it,” Canelo told the reporter.

Despite achieving numerous accolades in the sport, his decision to avoid a fight against David Benavidez seems to have spoiled his reputation among fans. Moreover, his relationship with Oscar De La Hoya seems to be getting worse every day. What do you think of Canelo’s statements? Do you think he should fight Benavidez?
