The kingpin of boxing, Canelo Alvarez put up one of his career-best performances against Callum Smith. Both the fighters earned substantially well in this fight, and it guaranteed the Mexican boxer around $20-25 million. But it was less than the $35 million he was making per fight under the DAZN deal.

In October 2018, Canelo and his then manager, Oscar De La Hoya, entered a prospective deal with DAZN. They sealed the deal for about $365 million for streaming Saul’s 11 fights on DAZN platforms throughout the world. But the lucrative deal between Canelo, DAZN, and ‘Golden Boy’ ended as the Mexican boxer filed a lawsuit against them.

Canelo dragged DAZN and ‘Golden Boy’ to court as the deal promised didn’t really come through, and Canelo wasn’t paid the amount the deal said he would get. Litigations are expensive, and this could have halted Saul’s career for a while. The case was finally settled in November this year, and Saul has opted to be a free agent since then.

After the settlement of the lawsuit, Al Haymon, a big-wig promoter of boxing, capitalized on this juncture. He offered Canelo a three-fight deal worth $75 million. In this deal, the first opponent Canelo would have to face was Caleb Plant and Jermall Charlo was the second. There was no information on who the third opponent would be for this deal.

Alvarez agreed to fight Caleb Plant for $25 million, but dispelled the other two fights for the same amount.

Should Canelo Alvarez accept the $75 million offer?

Canelo would have earned handsome pay cheques had his deal with DAZN been alive. But the world is going through a huge financial crunch because of the global pandemic. There is so far no reassurance of everything getting back to its place quickly. In this crisis period, $25 million per fight is still a substantial deal.

When things get back to normal, Canelo could re-negotiate or enter new terms with any dignitary parties to earn his fair share in the sport.
