Following his win over Caleb Plant, Canelo has been on the lookout for his next opponent. The ‘undisputed’ super-middleweight champion initially eyed a move up to cruiserweight to challenge the WBC cruiserweight champion Ilunga Makabu. However, with Makabu due to make his title defense, plans to set up that fight did not fall through.

Following this, there were a lot of rumors around the grapevine, of Canelo fighting Artur Beterbiev. With so many options for Canelo, they were connecting the Mexican pound-for-pound king with every other fighter. In the latest development to this story, ESPN Journalist Mike Coppinger gave fans some delightful news.

“I’m hearing that it’s much more likely that he’s gonna fight Jermall Charlo on Cinco De Mayo. There are talks right now for that fight.” Coppinger said on the latest episode of ESPN’s show ‘State Of Boxing’. The two fighters have always shown their interest in fighting each other.

Before the historic Canelo vs Plant fight last year, the unbeaten WBC champion called out the winner of the fight. “Yeah, hopefully, whoever is the winner, hopefully we can make a mega-deal.” Charlo said on ‘The PBC Podcast’. He kept mentioning how he wanted a mega-deal to further his legacy.

This is not the first time the American and the Mexican have made headlines for a potential fight. In December last year, following Canelo’s crowning as the unified super-middleweight champion, Charlo called Canelo out during a live stream.

“I wish I could give you the Canelo Álvarez fight for Christmas, but I can’t. Stop asking me stupid questions. He doesn’t want to fight!” Charlo said. However, back in 2019, Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya claimed that Charlo and his team at PBC declined a fight offer.
