Canelo Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr are two of the best fighters to come out of Mexico. The two fighters faced each other back in 2017 on Cinco De Mayo. The Mexican showdown in the ring took place on Mexico’s national celebration weekend.

The fight took place in front of a sold-out stadium in the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight took place at a catchweight of 164.5 pounds, with severe sanctions in place if Chavez comes in heavier than 164.5.

Going into their fight, both Alvarez and Chavez were on winning streaks and fans know them for their devastating knockout power. However, Chavez did not score a knockout in any of his last four victories and fans wondered if he was no longer fighting in his prime. Alvarez, on the other hand, was on a red hot run of form.

Canelo Alvarez fights like a volume puncher and simply outworks his opponents, systematically dismantling them as the fight progresses. Alvarez’s biggest threat remains his endurance. He can deliver ruthless first-rounds and at the same time, he can also dismantle his opponents over the course of 12 rounds.

Fight Result

Fans expected a closely contested bout between two of Mexico’s best boxers. However, since the first bell rang, Alvarez completely dominated his opponent with a near-perfect performance. The fight went the distance. However, all the judges scored the bout in favor of Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvares 120-108.

According to CompuBox, Alvarez threw 604 punches, connecting 228 of them with an accuracy of 37.7%. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. could only connect  71 shots (23.5%) from 302 thrown. Canelo doubled his opponent’s work rate and simply outclassed his fellow Mexican, leaving no doubt in anyone’s mind who the king of Mexico is.
