Undisputed super-middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez and his former promoter Oscar De La Hoya have had a rocky relationship through the years. Things between the two started to turn sour following Alvarez’s departure to Matchroom Promotion run by Eddie Hearn.

Moreover, it looks like De La Hoya is back to taking shots at Alvarez as he shared his thoughts on the matchup between his former client and David Benavidez. This matchup is cited to be one of the best in the sport but talks of a bout have never been initiated. De La Hoya feels that this is because Alvarez is ducking the mandatory challenger, which prompted him to claim that the fight will never happen.

Canelo will never fight him (Benavidez). He’s too young and talented.” De La Hoya posted on Instagram. Following this, fans also backed the boxing legend as they called out Alvarez for not taking the fight.

Fans back Oscar De La Hoya

One fan agreed with the former champ and stated that Alvarez doesn’t want that fight.”I agree, Canelo don’t want the smoke.” he wrote. Another fan claimed that Alvarez was starting to become like Mayweather, who infamously tried to avoid fighting Manny Pacquiao in his prime. “Canelo is starting to sound like Mayweather back in 2010 when he made up excuses not to fight Pacquiao.” he wrote.

Moreover, one fan stated that although he never agreed with De La Hoya, he was right about this. He also added that despite Benavidez being the mandatory challenger, no fight has been booked. “I don’t ever agree with Oscar, but he’s right. Well at least it appears this way Benavidez is the WBC mandatory and still no fight.” he wrote. One fan even claimed that Alvarez would avoid that fight like it was the plague.”He’s right. Canelo will avoid that fight like the plague.” He wrote.

Despite the fans wanting this fight forever, Alvarez is not of the same opinion. He has dismissed Benavidez as an opponent, claiming that he didn’t have the resume to ask for a fight. The 168-pound champ has made it clear he wants to avenge his loss against Dmitry Bivol after beating Golovkin in their trilogy bout. However, Benavidez is the mandatory challenger, which makes the possibility of a fight inevitable.
