The two-time super-middleweight champion David Benavidez’s father is so sure about Canelo Alvarez not taking a shot at ‘The Mexican Monster’ that he claimed the latter will vacate his WBC super-middleweight belt in order to avoid Benavidez.
The WBC has officially approved a title eliminator clash between former IBF super middleweight champion Caleb Plant and David Benavidez. Though the date and venue are yet to be declared, the fight is most likely to take place early in 2023. The winner of the contest will become a mandatory challenger to Alvarez’s WBC throne.

This mandatory element has led to many speculations. As Canelo has already expressed his intention of not facing any Mexican fighters as he represents Mexico. Therefore, if Benavidez, who is Mexican, emerges as a winner, then what will Alvarez do?
Well, Benavidez’s father has a reasonable answer to this query.
What did Benavidez Sr. say about Canelo and Benavidez’s possible fight?
Speaking to Izquierdazo, Benavidez Sr. said, “To be honest, Canelo will not fight David Benavidez. I think he will try to vacate that belt. He will pretend to be angry and won’t take the fight with David Benavidez. I believe his fans will not be happy, and I think that will be a stain in his career to be that great Mexican and make history.”
Since Alvarez became the undisputed super-middleweight champion, his critics are accusing him of ducking Benavidez. However, he defeated the legit champion, Caleb Plant, Billy Joe Saunders, and Callum Smith in order to prove his worth at 168. But his legitimacy as a champion is often questioned by putting forth Benavidez’s name.
