Former IBF heavyweight champion, Charles Martin, has revealed his intentions for a potential Anthony Joshua rematch. The American said the prospect of a rematch is the only thing that he’s training for.

Martin lost to Joshua in 2016 in his first title defense. The defeat meant that ‘AJ’ tasted glory for the first time in his career. However, there was no rematch clause, and the pair have not met in the ring after that.

Almost five years later, Martin has revealed his intentions regarding a rematch with the Englishman. In a chat with ESNEWS on YouTube, he said, “Oh, I’m going to destroy Joshua man. All I want to tell Joshua is, I never got my fair shake. Like I said, I’m already beyond it, I moved forward from it, but I never got a fair shake.”

Martin’s defeat to Joshua gave him an unwanted title of the second-shortest duration as heavyweight champion. Therefore, the loss had an added effect on the American. Hence it’s understandable that he wants a rematch.

However, given their career paths since that fight, it’s hard to see how Martin will get the rematch.

Charles Martin says the Anthony Joshua rematch is the only thing keeping him active

Joshua is close to a two-fight deal with Tyson Fury, which will keep him occupied for 2021. If he wins both those fights, he would then have to honor his mandatory obligations. However, Martin isn’t giving up hope on a second fight against ‘AJ’.

He said, “I dragged myself all the way up from my basement just for you… He’s the reason that I’m here. Knock his as* out.”

Despite his desire, it seems to be an unrealistic expectation from Martin, at least for now. Rumors suggest he will fight Deontay Wilder next. Maybe if he can beat the ‘Bronze Bomber’, he will have a shot at a Joshua rematch. However, given the excitement in the heavyweight division, it seems unlikely.
