According to some sources, Gervonta Davis is set to return to the square circle on June 22 against Frank Martin. However, it’s his new physique that prompted Claressa Shields to make a wild accusation on social media today. What’s more, even former NFL star Tony ‘The Closer’ Robinson was left bewildered with Davis’ transformation.

Davis, 29-0, has been out of the ring for nearly a year since his breakthrough win against Ryan Garcia in April last year. So, as the rumored fight date against Martin is inching closer, Calvin Ford, Davis’ trainer, shared a montage of pictures on Instagram yesterday. One of those pictures caught Shields’ eye when it was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by Boxing Kingdom soon after.

Gervonta Davis: Ripped or drained?

Sharing the picture in question, Boxing Kingdom wrote, “Gervonta already ripped. Zero body fat.” Meanwhile, in the picture, Davis can be seen training with Ford, visibly skinnier than ever before. So, when Shields chanced upon the picture, she immediately raised some eyebrows about Davis’ new physique.

Shields wrote, “This picture [is] not real.” Seemingly, Shields was left in utter disbelief with the transformation. Moreover, soon afterward, Robinson found Shields’ reaction to the picture and left one of his own. He wrote, “Why he looked so drained[?]”

It is possible that Davis may have gained some weight during his period of inactivity, so in preparation for his upcoming fight, he was trying to get back to his ideal weight range. Meanwhile, someone else has confirmed Davis will fight Martin on the same card as him.

While Gervonta Davis might have gotten the return he desires, David Benavidez had to resort to different means. Unable to convince Canelo Alvarez for a fight, Benavidez will take on Ukraine’s Oleksandr Gvozdyk at 175 pounds, eyeing a clash with the winner of Dmitry Bivol vs. Artur Beterbiev

Meanwhile, appearing in the FreshandFit podcast shared over YouTube on 4 April, Benavidez spoke about his upcoming fight while confirming Davis’ fight as well. “I don’t know if it is June 15 or June 22, but I will fight for the light heavyweight title and on the same night, Gervonta Davis will fight Frank Martin. It will probably be the biggest card of the year. It will be in Las Vegas or Houston,” said Benavidez.

With Gervonta Davis’ possible return to the ring right around the corner, Claressa Shields and Tony Robinson seem to be worried about Davis’ weight. However, Davis would likely get back to his usual self by the time his fight comes around, so there might not be anything to worry about. What did you think about Davis’ new physique?
