Entrances and entrance themes are for show but form an essential part of a fighter’s arrival to the cage or ring. The flamboyance only adds to the intrigue surrounding the fight. The grand arrival is a final effort to hype the masses before the battle begins. Jamel Herring understood this and elected to stun the Chukchansi Park fans with a crazy entrance ahead of his maiden WBO junior lightweight title defense.

Herring served as a United States Marine before stepping onto the canvas, first as an amateur and then as a professional. He hasn’t forgotten the time he spent in service of the nation and he made an entrance to serve two purposes.

First, to let the marines add to the big fight feel. Second, to do his bit for Veterans day on 11th November, two days after the event.

As the crowd waited for ‘Semper Fi‘ to emerge, the Marines’ Hymn blared out across the Minor League ballpark. 300 marines participated in the entrance. Herring made his way to the ring atop a Humvee which drew parallels to warriors heading into battle.

Having represented his country on the battlefield and in the ring, he rode with the support of his fellow marines and successfully defended his title.

Jamel Herring will look to keep his title

Owing to the Coronavirus pandemic, organizations are holding events behind closed doors. The fight cards are low key, and Herring making a grand arrival to the ring this Saturday seems rather unlikely.

Fans in the UFC may concur with the muted entrances. In July, middleweight fighter Darren Till opted to walk out in silence. He usually enters with Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline. He decided against it as his entrance is to pique the interest of fans in the arena.

‘Semper Fi’ will be glad he is getting the chance to stay active and defend his belt. This is because his previous scheduled bouts were delayed as he contracted the Coronavirus. This Saturday, he will aim to represent the marines, whom he identifies with, and successfully retain his belt.

Looking back at old entrances is all fans can do to take solace as they are a thing of the past because of the Coronavirus restrictions.
