David Benavidez is set to make his return in the ring against Caleb Plant on 25 March 2023 in Las Vegas. The 12-round super middleweight bout has been much anticipated for a substantial period and is now set to take place in just a few days. The fight is crucial for Benavidez to win and seal the deal with Canelo Alvarez.

The winner of the bout will become the mandatory WBC challenger. Plant fought Alvarez in November of 2021. The former champion got defeated in the 11th round. However, Benavidez has not yet fought him. The fans have been demanding that they square off against each other for many years. Though, it appears the time has come as long as Benavidez is the victor in his upcoming bout.

Alvarez is the current title holder and Benavidez wants to fight for the title. He believes that he is the best super middleweight fighter. Benavidez has been transparent in his interest in fighting Alvarez. However, the same has not come to fruition yet. Though, Alvarez would have no option left and has to fight him next if he is the victor in his bout against Plant.

Recently, Benavidez was asked about fighting Alvarez next if he defeats Plant. To which he stated, “We would have to see you know, I think, I want to fight Canelo, just to prove myself down the best 168 but if he doesn’t want to fight then of course that’s the route we would go.”

He further stated that Alvarez cannot fight anyone else but himself.

Benavidez adds “I mean, I am his mandatory for his past two fights so I mean it’s my turn. It’s my turn to fight for the title.”

Most likely, Alvarez would fight him next if he wins against Plant to prevent being stripped of the title.

Though, one may wonder how Alvarez and his team perceive it.
