Former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder is set to make his comeback to the squared circle after a year-long layoff. The former Olympian hasn’t competed in the ring since his loss to Tyson Fury back in 2021. He will face Finnish heavyweight contender Robert Helenius on October 15th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

The Bronze Bomber is known for his devastating power, having knocked out every opponent he has ever defeated. His knockout-to-win percentage stands at a staggering 97.61% making him one of the most fearsome boxers in the division. Moreover, it seems that even after the layoff, Wilder’s power hasn’t diminished after his coach Malik Scott revealed that he needed to go through reconstructive surgery after training Wilder.

In an interview with Insider, Scott stated that holding the pads for Wilder was no easy task, even though it might seem he was exaggerating. “I’ve had to have reconstruction surgery. A lot of people see me holding pads and I’m riding with the shots, they say I’m exaggerating. There’s no way.” He said.

Moreover, he added that Wilder’s power was far greater than any other heavyweight Scott has trained. “I’ve held the pads for top-notch heavyweights all across the world. Gerald Washington bangs me up on pads, and I love training Gerald on pads because I get to make sure he’s delivering the punch correct. Then I come to Deontay, and you can just imagine. He’s beating my body up, but I love this sport and I’m passionate about these fights.” He added.

Scott has been training ‘The Bronze Bomber’ for over a year and has suffered the consequences of Wilder’s power. However, his love for the sport is what made him continue training despite the injuries.

There’s the old saying, ‘If it makes dollars, it makes sense.’ And he agreed as well.” said Wilder.
