The lightweight division is easily one of the most exciting in the sport; Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney are two of the top talents at 135 lbs. The pair share history between them, dating back to the amateurs. However, they are yet to meet each other in the professional scene.
Despite this, it appeared that Garcia, as the mandatory challenger to ‘The Dream’ had the opportunity to make the fight. However, he chased after other big fights against Gervonta Davis and Manny Pacquiao.
‘King Ry’ has now announced his next fight, and it’s neither of those.

The undefeated 21-0 boxer took to his Instagram to announce the date for his next bout. He shared a fight banner which showed him and Javier Fortuna and captioned it, “I’m finally back in action 💥 “JULY 9th” IM SO EXCITED MORE MEMORIES TO MAKE ⚔️”
This showed that despite not getting to fight Davis or Pacquiao, Garcia is excited about his next fight. However, there will be a lot of criticism, as the American sensation teased ‘big fights’ and Fortuna is a relatively low profile fighter.

First to criticize the choice of opponent was Garcia’s old-foe, Devin Haney. The undefeated WBC champion will face Jorge Linares on May 29. However, he showed his honest thoughts on Ryan Garcia’s next fight and accused him of ducking.
‘The Dream’ took to Twitter to share his thoughts and reminded everyone of what Ryan Garcia’s next fight means. “Let’s not forget Ryan is fighting another Title Eliminator, when he could’ve easily been fighting for the TITLE,” wrote Haney.
