21-year-old Devin Haney has successfully defended his WBC lightweight strap after a 12-round tactical fight against the veteran, Yuriorkis Gamboa. ‘The Dream’ entered the ring with several eyes on him that were constantly measuring his performance with Gervonta Davis’s win over Gamboa.

That said, Haney couldn’t take out his opponent. However, he has claimed a comfortable win via unanimous division with 118-109 and 120-107.

Ahead of the fight, ‘The Dream’ said that hitting a one-punch shot is not his style. Instead, he believes in looking “pretty” throughout the contest.

He replicated the same in the squared circle and beat down Gamboa with combinations and crisp jabs throughout. However, Yuriorkis Gamboa has also looked sharp inside the ring. Going against one of the best lightweight champions, the Cuban displayed sheer skill and didn’t let Haney infuse a lot of damage.

It was clearly not enough to bag the win. Despite suffering a fourth professional defeat, Gamboa is still a threat to the lightweight roster.

WBC champion Devin Haney defends his title, and Twitter reacts to it

There wasn’t much explosion inside the ring, but Haney landed some brutal jabs on Gamboa. In the fifth and sixth round, ‘The Dream’ almost took his best shape and slipped away from Gamboa’s best punches. Thus, his defensive skills were also a huge element in the fight. In the later rounds, Haney dug deep into Gamboa’s body and surged ahead on the cards.

Thus, it was clearly a great title defense from the undefeated WBC champion. He has outpointed his opponent and sent a stern warning to the other lightweight champions. After the fight, Haney acknowledged Gamboa as a “crafty veteran” and hoisted his WBC title on his shoulders. Both the lightweight elites displayed respect for each other.
