When the fighter is as good as Gennady Golovkin, fans can never have enough of the action. After suffering his trilogy loss at the hands of Canelo Alvarez in 2022, his future in the sport was murky at best. However, he had never officially announced his retirement! That seems to have changed as the Kazak’s promoter, Tom Loeffler, has done it for him!

On top of that, in February, the Kazakh National Olympic Committee announced that ‘GGG’ would be their new president, all but solidifying Golovkin’s retirement from the sweet science. And it’s not like Loeffler wasn’t aware of this, so he gave his final word while speaking to Boxing Scene in an interview on April 10.

Tom Loeffler shares details of GGG’s new job!

Despite a storied career that ended with a professional record of 42-2-1, Loeffler could not help but desire a farewell bout. He said, “I was always hoping for one more fight, whether it was a farewell fight in Kazakhstan or one of these matchups you see in the Middle East—that type of thing.”

Disappointed with the reality that ‘GGG’ won’t enter the ring again, his promoter reflected on Golovkin’s position as the president of the Kazakh National Olympic Committee. “That’s a very high position in Kazakhstan; he’s not only the head of Olympic boxing in the country; he’s the head of every sport of the national Olympic team in Kazakhstan. So, that’s a full-time job for him,” said Loeffler.

In the latter part of the interview, Loeffler confirmed the news in plain words, highlighting the severity of Golovkin’s position. “It seems like he’s just going to get on with his life. It’s a big position that he’s been appointed to in Kazakhstan. So, I believe he’ll just get on with his career. Staying involved with sport, but not actively in the ring,” said Loeffler. Moreover, even ‘GGG’ has voiced his thoughts on his new position.

Gennady Golovkin: “I am more than happy to…”

‘GGG’ started his professional boxing career all the way back in May 2006! He got his first title shot in the very next year when he fought Milton Nunez, capturing the WBA interim middleweight title. From there, he quickly rose in the ranks and eventually unified the WBC, IBF, and WBA middleweight titles.

However, in the end, he could not become undisputed because of his two losses to Canelo Alvarez. Despite that, ‘GGG’ claims he is more than happy to work for his country. On February 26, Golovkin wrote on X, “I would like to express my sincere gratitude for everyone for all those warm wishes I am receiving all day on my election as NOC Kazakhstan President. I am more than happy to represent my country in the global Olympic movement.”

Two years after his defeat to Canelo Alvarez, ‘GGG’s’ promoter has finally announced his retirement officially.
