Super middleweight king Canelo Alvarez is an opponent every boxer in and around his division dreams about. WBO No.1 contender Diego Pacheco is no different! The 23-year-old had expressed hope to dance with the Mexican superstar, but his trainer Jose Benavidez Sr. wants it to happen quickly.

The Los Angeles, California native is coming off a dominant unanimous decision win, over 36-year-old Steven Nelson a handful of days ago. Right after the fight, he called out Canelo’s former dance partner Edgar Berlanga for a fight, knowing full well that landing a fight against Canelo is harder than defying gravity.

Jose Benavidez Sr. claims Canelo Alvarez would never fight Diego

During the post-fight press conference, Jose Benavidez Sr. pitted him against Canelo Alvarez. “Like I said, you know, [Pacheco is] getting stronger and stronger,” Benavidez Sr. said, surrounded by a flock of reporters. “And everybody knows that Canelo would never take a fight with Diego Pacheco.”

Benavidez Sr. praised Pacheco for his skills and abilities and stated, “If Canelo’s here and [Pacheco is] ready to take that challenge. I think that would be a great fight.” Now, it appears the undefeated 23-year-old is singing to his trainer’s tune, respectfully challenging Canelo Alvarez to a fight.

“Of course man, you know my dream is to become a world champion,” he said in an interview with The Ring Magazine. “What else then to go against the GOAT, Canelo, you know the king of the division.” It’s worth noting that Canelo Alvarez is reportedly in conversation with former undisputed welterweight champion Terence Crawford for a fight in September.

This leaves Canelo’s May fight date wide open, which, if the stars align, Pacheco could take over to fight the Mexican superstar. Regardless, Pacheco expressed hopefulness towards getting an opportunity to fight Canelo, noting, “It would be a dream come true for me to share the ring with him.” However, if that doesn’t happen, Pacheco has a backup plan.

“But if not, you know, anyone else in the top 5 too man, you know we’re ready,” he said during the interview. Regardless, fans quickly warned the rising star when they discovered this narrative.

Fans say Diego Pacheco is not ready for Canelo

Despite what Pacheco and his trainer think, the public has spoken and they don’t agree! One user claimed the 23-year-old is not ready, but that’s not the end. “He’s not ready at the moment, but with more fights, he’ll get there,” the user wrote. However, while Pacheco waits, Canelo grows older and closer to retirement.

The next user warned Pacheco about fighting Canelo, advising him to fight the top 10 in the division for now. “He’s a great young fighter, but he should pump the breaks on any potential Canelo fight, for now. A couple more fights against top 10 opponents will serve him well,” the user wrote. In this case, starting with Edgar Berlanga would be a great idea for his career.

Meanwhile, this user saw Pacheco easily landing the fight. “Of course, he’ll give him the opportunity, it’s an easy win for Canelo lol,” the user wrote. Notably, Canelo has built a reputation for taking easy fights, and most people think Pacheco would be the same.

Another user absolutely hated the idea of Canelo vs. Pacheco. “This kid has beaten exactly NOBODY. Canelo wouldn’t even spar this hype job,” the user claimed. However, if Canelo’s recent activity is any evidence, Pacheco is the exact sort of opponent Canelo would go for.

Amid all this, one user roped in David Benavidez into the mix. “This how he wanted Benavidez to ask for the fight 😂 🦆,” the user commented. Interestingly, Benavidez is done by asking. He is demanding a fight against Canelo Alvarez.

It appears after a 23-fight undefeated streak Diego Pacheco feels he is ready to challenge the boss of his division. However, fans clearly don’t feel the same way, as they asked the rising star to stick to his plan B. Do you agree with the comments?
