Former undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez is one of those names that doesn’t need any introductions. With both years and a decorated resume to back him, the Mexican superstar could hang up his gloves tomorrow and still retain his legendary status. However, nobody is quite ready to say their goodbyes.

The good news is that neither is Canelo Alvarez, who is slated to square off against William Scull on May 3rd in Riyadh, and potentially Terence Crawford later this year in September. He recently signed a four-fight deal with His Excellency Turki Alalshikh to make the two fights, letting fans take a sigh of relief that the boxing legend will remain active for a few more years.

Interestingly, ‘Cinnamon’ has previously spoken about retiring from the sport, providing an exact date to pull the plug on his career. “I’m not thinking about making [a specific] amount of money, and then I retire – no. I’m going to do my thing, and then 37, 38, is the moment to go [and retire],” Canelo told TMZ Sports previously.

However, Alvarez’s wife, Fernanda Gómez, seems to have a different opinion on when he should call it quits. While appearing in an interview with The Sun recently, the 34-year-old revealed that his wife wants him to remain active in the sport for longer. “No. Actually, my wife wants me to retire at 40,” Canelo said when asked about his family’s opinion on his retirement.

“Imagine that. And I say ‘No, I don’t think so,'” he added. When pressed further about why his wife feels a longer stay in the sport is necessary, he said, “Obviously, she wants to have more kids. And she wants the other kids to see me in the ring, and seeing me, what I do in the training camps, and this and that.”

Despite her wishes, Canelo wants his future children to see him in a different light. “I say to her, ‘They gonna see me in another area of my life. In my business, doing business,’” Canelo said. While his wife wants their future kids to see what their father does, Canelo Alvarez has revealed what he tells his daughter before fights.

Canelo Alvarez reveals how he calms his nervous daughter

Canelo Alvarez has revealed how he comforts his daughter Maria when she gets nervous before his fights. The Mexican superstar said his children—Emily, Maria, and Saul Adiel—often attend his bouts but can get anxious watching him in the ring. “I think Maria is the one with more nervous on herself because she says that she don’t want somebody to hurt me or something like that,” Canelo told The Sun Sport.

To calm her down, Canelo reassures her with a promise born from dedication. “And I say, ‘Don’t worry, that’s why I’m here training and doing my best here in training camp so that doesn’t happen.’” While his younger kids are often in the gym with him, it’s 17-year-old Emily who best understands the magnitude of his stardom. “Maybe my older daughter… already realized how big I am,” Canelo added. “But my other kids… maybe they realise a little bit.”
