When Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez announced last year that he would be fighting Edgar Berlanga on September 14 in Las Vegas, boxing fans had two questions. One, why are you not fighting David Benavidez, your WBC mandatory, who is desperate to fight you? And two, who the heck is Edgar Berlanga?

Well, Berlanga was a previously undefeated super-middleweight with a 22-0 record coming into the Canelo fight. Alvarez, who was in his more careful phase following the famous Dmitry Bivol loss, wanted someone who wouldn’t really pose any real danger to him. And boy, did he get that. Berlanga proved himself every bit the +900 betting underdog and got pummeled by the Mexican for twelve rounds en route to a unanimous decision loss.

Coming up way short against the only high-level opponent he has ever faced, you may expect Berlanga to be a bit humble, right? Well, it turns out he’s not. In fact, he is quite the opposite, as revealed in a recent interview where ‘The Chosen One’ was asked his opinion about some of his fellow super middleweights. The interview happened in the lead up to the 27-year-old’s upcoming fight against Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz at Caribe Royale Orlando in Florida on March 15.

“Trash!” Berlanga declared when asked his opinion of Canelo’s former opponents—WBA interim super middleweight champion Caleb Plant, former junior middleweight champion Jaime Munguia, and super middleweight contender Christian Mbilli. “Super trash!” the American exclaimed when asked about the 24-year-old promising up-and-comer Diego Pacheco. But what about himself? Well, you wouldn’t be surprised to learn that ‘The Chosen One’ called himself a “super legend”.

And fans, as you can imagine, didn’t agree with Berlanga at all. No. The fans, in fact, had quite a few issues with Berlanga and his bombastic claims. They took to the replies of a clip of Berlanga’s interview shared by ‘@dantheboxingman’ on X to let their thoughts known.

Effects of the Canelo fight still linger, claims fan while bashing Edgar Berlanga

One fan pointed out the absurdity of Berlanga, whose claim to fame is that he lost to Canelo, calling vaunted former champions like Plant and Munguia ‘trash’: “Has zero notable wins and lost every round to Canelo lol. All of those fighters are better than him.”

Another wholeheartedly agreed with this sentiment but also admitted that perhaps having this kind of delusional self-confidence was necessary to succeed in combat sports: “If Delusional was a person!🤦🏾‍♂️🤣😂 (On the flip side! S/O to the young homie you suppose to believe in yourself in this sport!🤷🏾‍♂️)”.

One fan, however, felt that Berlanga’s cockiness was perhaps a result of ‘The Chosen One’ still feeling the effects of the devastating left hook that Alvarez landed on him in the third round of their fight, which had downed Berlanga: “That left hook from Canelo must still be effecting him.”

Another fan was perplexed to see the guy who got schooled by Canelo talk so much trash about other- some would say better- fighters: “This guy lost one big fight and thinks it made him a legend 🤦🏻‍♂️🤣.”

Another fan seconded this sentiment and pointed out how Berlanga is in no position to call himself a legend and other, more accomplished, fighters trash after his terrible showing against Canelo: “Never imagined a one sided loss would get to someone’s head like this it’s pathetic lmao.”

What do you think about Edgar Berlanga trash-talking his fellow super-middleweights?
