Last weekend, the undisputed collision between Jermell Charlo and Brian Castano ended in a tragic draw. This fight was one of the most intriguing boxing events of 2021, and given the belts on the line, it hooked in countless fans. Also, even though both the fighters gave their best in the fight, Castano had the edge over Charlo.

Yet, the judges termed this fight as a draw, leaving everyone in shock That said, Eddie Hearn expressed his notion about boxing judges and referees and addressed this entire anecdote.

Speaking to iFL TV, he said, “I think that judges and referees should be accountable for their actions on TV and in front of the media… You should be allowed to explain. You shouldn’t just do your job and then the commission or governing body say, ‘Don’t talk to anyone, just go.'” (h/t Michael Benson)

Right from the first second in this encounter, the underdog, Castano, walked Charlo down with his sublime power. He was the aggressive boxer that night, and his game plan was certainly evident to everyone. He pressed ‘Iron Man’ in the initial rounds of the fight.

The Argentinian boxer was even on the brink of knocking out Charlo, but the American boxer survived the wrath of his power. Overall, Castano seemed a better boxer on fight night and many boxing pundits felt that he did enough to win that fight.

But the match officials’ decision to pin this fight as a draw raised countless questions from fans, fighters, and boxing personalities.

That said, the Matchroom boss, Hearn, in his above comments, seemed firm on his point of view. He feels match officials need to create some form of transparency pertaining to the results they declare. Many boxing enthusiasts may echo this thought process, but it’ll be interesting to see if these changes are adopted in the coming few months/years.
