Canelo Alvarez shocked many in 2019 by knocking out Sergey Kovalev for the (WBO) light heavyweight gold, which made him a four-weight world champion. Alvarez’s next fight against Dmitry Bivol on May 7 will once again offer him the (WBA) light heavyweight strap. On beating Bivol, the P4P king shall move forward to a potential trilogy against Gennady Golovkin at 168lbs.

It means Alvarez will seemingly move across multiple divisions in his next appearances. However, he doesn’t intend to quit the light heavyweight category after facing Bivol. Matchroom promoter, Eddie Hearn, who is now working with Canelo Alvarez in a two-fight deal, shared the Mexican star’s plans for conquering the 175 lbs division.

In a chat with Boxing Social, Hearn said, “I think it’s [Dmitry Bivol] a really tough fight. Because you know he [Canelo Alvarez] wants to move up and challenge himself and do something different. He has got one eye at the undisputed at 175. He has got obviously the trilogy with Gennady Golovkin. Probably the biggest fight in boxing. He has done everything at 168.”

That said, Alvarez can make a return to 175 lbs in the future and challenge the other champions, similar to what he did at 168 lbs. After beating Kovalev, Canelo fought Callum Smith in December 2021 and earned the WBC, WBA, Ring super middleweight belts.

In 2022, he defended the belts against Avni Yildirim and then earned the WBO and IBF belts from Billy Joe Saunders and Caleb Plant. respectively in May and November. While Alvarez is still the undisputed super middleweight champion, he is looking to add a light heavyweight belt next. After that, he looks likely to come back at 168 lbs.

Canelo Alvarez is truly a pound for pound phenomenon

Alvarez vs GGG 3 will only happen if both men win their respective fights. Gennady Golovkin will face Ryota Murata in a massive middleweight title unification fight, while Alvarez takes on Bivol. If either man loses the show, the trilogy will possibly fall off. In that case, Hearn has already pitched Alvarez to become undisputed at 175 lbs.

Therefore, current light heavyweight champions like Artur Beterbiev (WBC/IBF) and Joe Smith Jr. (WBO) can be future opponents for Alvarez. Beterbiev is currently the only world champion with a 100% KO ratio and is currently on a flawless run of 17-0.
