Undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez was not happy with Argentinian soccer star Lionel Messi after the latter allegedly shoved aside a Mexican jersey. The incident occurred following Argentina’s victory over Mexico in the FIFA World Cup. The match was a crucial one for “La Albicelestes,” as they needed to win to stay in the competition.

The victory was marked for celebration in the locker room where Messi was seen moving a Mexican jersey with his foot. However, Alvarez was furious at this and took to social media and issued threats to the 7-time Ballon D’Or winner. “He better pray to God that I don’t find him. Just like I respect Argentina, he has to respect Mexico! I’m not talking about the country as a whole, just about the bulls*** that Messi did.” he wrote in a tweet.

The controversy has had a lot of major developments since then and many people have their own version of the story. Moreover, Alvarez’s trainer Eddy Reynoso also gave his take on the matter.

Eddy Reynoso reacts to Canelo Alvarez’s threats to Lionel Messi

In an interview with ID Boxing Reynoso was asked what he thought about The Mexican star’s actions. He then went on to defend Alvarez stating that he only did what he did out of a passion for his country and sport. “It’s simply passion. Passion for your country, passion for your sport. Nothing more than that.” Said Reynoso.

While Alvarez was certainly in the wrong as it was later revealed that the jersey was moved unintentionally as Messi got caught up in the celebration after this historic victory. Moreover, Alvarez has also issued an apology for his threats to the soccer star.

Alvarez was quick to realize his mistake after receiving a huge backlash from the public. This lead him to apologize for his threat on social media as he took to Twitter and gave his side of the story. He claimed that his actions were done out of a passion for his country and sport and were sorry for issuing threats.

These last few days I got carried away by the passion and love I feel for my country and I made comments that were out of place. So I want to apologize to Messi and the people of Argentina.” He wrote.

Since then, Messi made sure of ending Mexico’s hope of entering the knockout stages after Argentina beat Poland to advance. Mexico, on the other hand, was knocked out of the tournament despite winning against Saudi Arabia.
