Former super middleweight No.1 contender Edgar Berlanga has high hopes for his future. This includes a rematch with the super middleweight king Canelo Alvarez. Yep, you read that right! And, as you might have guessed, the boxing world hasn’t taken kindly to Berlanga’s bold ambitions, swiftly tearing them apart on social media.

The Brooklyn-born puncher is coming off a one-sided unanimous decision loss to ‘Cinnamon’ last September at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Despite being younger, and supposedly stronger, Berlanga could only watch the master punch his way to a victory. However, that hasn’t extinguished Berlanga’s flame of ambition.

Edgar Berlanga’s 6 Man hit-list

Earlier today, the Puerto Rican boxer took to X to unveil a six-man hitlist of fighters he hopes to face in the future. “After my March 8th fight, these are the next 6 fights that I want in no particular order. LINE’EM UP FOR ME,” he wrote. There’s, of course, Canelo Alvarez, but you must be wondering who else made the cut. The list includes Jaime Munguia, Jermall Charlo, Caleb Plant, Hamzah Sheeraz, and Diego Pacheco. Interestingly, Berlanga is set to fight on March 8th in Puerto Rico against an as-yet-unnamed opponent. Meanwhile, following Pacheco’s recent victory over Steven Nelson, both camps have expressed mutual interest in a future clash.

Berlanga’s ambitions clearly aim high, as most of his targets are top-10-ranked fighters, although Sheeraz technically competes in the middleweight division. However, when fans caught wind of Berlanga’s bold aspirations, the internet was quick to respond with a barrage of trolling and skepticism.

Fans brand Canelo Alvarez rematch impossible

After how badly Canelo Alvarez defeated Berlanga, fans didn’t hesitate to hold up a mirror to the Brooklyn native. Many users predicted Berlanga would lose all six fights. One commented, “I see 3 L’s,” while another added, “You lose every single one of those 😂.” A third chimed in, “You lose all of them. U not elite,” and someone else quipped, “Bro wanna go 0-6.” It’s safe to say that confidence in Berlanga’s chances isn’t exactly running high.

While others claimed Berlanga doesn’t stand a chance against the 6 fighters, this user shamed Berlanga for wanting a rematch with Canelo. “Why would Canelo rematch you,” the user asked. With Canelo in the last few years of his boxing career, it’s highly unlikely he would rematch someone he already destroyed.

Meanwhile, this user shared some advice for Berlanga to help him choose an opponent. “Munguia just got knocked out, fight Plant. You don’t deserve a Canelo rematch,” the user commented. In Canelo’s last few fights, no one really put up much of a challenge, so a rematch doesn’t seem necessary, and Berlanga is no Gennady Golovkin.

The next user scoffed at the idea of a rematch between Canelo and Berlanga. “Dude said Canelo rematch! You had one shot and fumbled the bag,” the user wrote. It’s worth noting that fans weren’t happy about the first fight, no way there would be a rematch.

Someone else simply branded Berlanga’s ambition futile. “You’re not going to get a Canelo rematch in this lifetime, Edgar, maybe in another universe,” the user wrote. Not to mention, Canelo is reportedly in the conversation to finalize a fight against Terence Crawford, an opponent fans have been demanding Canelo fight.

That said, while Edgar Berlanga may want to avenge his first career loss by fighting Canelo Alvarez again, it appears fans aren’t on his side. Not now, maybe ever. But the rest of his hitlist seems admirable. Perhaps a win against the five could convince Canelo to throw down with him one more time. What do you think? Does Berlanga deserve a rematch?
