For Errol Spence Jr. fans, it must feel like ages since the Terence Crawford fight in July 2023. In what was a grand showdown in Las Vegas, Bud dominated and pummeled the unified welterweight champion to a ninth-round TKO stoppage. As a result, the loss was significant. Add to it the fact that it was his first-ever career loss, it would make more sense why it’s been two years and his status has fallen into that of an inactive boxer.

Some fans would argue that Spence Jr. deserves some time off the ring, considering the severe car crash he went through in October 2019, and the eye surgeries he’s had within four years. Spence Jr. has been echoing the same sentiment on his X handle, too, when fans call him out for inactivity. First, it was a February comment replying to a fan who supported Sugar Ray Leonard for coming back after a three-year hiatus and retina surgery to fight Marvin Hagler in 1987. And now, the 35-year-old southpaw has silenced fans with a similar response.

Frustrated by Spence’s inactivity as a boxer, one of the fans and users had commented below an Instagram post saying, “Mannnnn it’s been a long time Spence!! If you [are] not gon [going to continue] boxing you need to go head n [and] annoucr [announce your] retirement, quit keeping yo [your] loyal fan base hoping and guessing.” This fan was so annoyed at the lack of tangible update from Errol Spence Jr. that he suggested the former world champion retire instead of keeping his fans guessing.

To that, Spence quickly responded, stating, [I’ve] been said [saying that] I’ll comeback when IM ready. Know one rushing me to do sh*t.” To the fan, it might have sounded rude, but from Spence’s perspective, he had just gone through a lot and needed time to figure everything out.

The thing is, Spence Jr. did try to make a return against the current unified light middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora. The WBC had even added Spence’s name to their rankings. Though negotiations for the matchup failed in March this year, making it look like the boxer may even be retiring at any point now.

Fate doesn’t seem to be in Errol Spence Jr.’s favor

That had even led a parody X account to post that Spence is planning to step out of the sport because of a sustained eye injury during training. But in April, immediately countering the news as fake, Spence Jr addressed the issue. The fighter had immediately posted Instagram stories admitting that he wouldn’t be hanging up his gloves just yet.

Still, there has been no confirming news about his return since the failed Fundora fight negotiations. And it looks like fans would just have to trust The Truth‘s words for this one. He is not planning to retire. But he does not have a well-planned return at hand either.

So, fans and competitors would just need to wait until there are any official announcements from Errol Spence Jr. himself. What are your thoughts about this? Do you think that Spence Jr. might quit the sport anytime soon? Or does he just need time?
