Former welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. has been on a bit of a ride. Since losing to Terence Crawford back in July last year, ‘The Truth’ hasn’t been spotted in the ring yet. Some time ago, reports emerged suggesting, Sebastian Fundora’s WBO mandatory challenger, Crawford, stepped aside to let Fundora fight Spence first.

Despite no official announcement of the potential fight, there had been rumors about the bout taking place in early 2025 for Fundora’s WBO and WBC super welterweight titles. However, there seem to be some issues lingering about that bout, which came to light during an X exchange between Spence Jr. and a fan.

You see, on November 24, Fight Hub TV shared a clip of ‘The Truth,’ originally posted on his social media. The video showed Spence Jr. alongside lightweight fighter Frank Martin, confidently stating, “We working, man.” Fight Hub TV hinted that Spence Jr. might already be back in the gym, preparing for his upcoming clash with Sebastian Fundora.

Later that day, a fan reposted the clip on X, confidently asserting that they had always believed Spence Jr. was quietly gearing up for the Fundora fight. The fan predicted he would return in top form to defeat the 26-year-old, setting the stage for a much-anticipated rematch with Terence Crawford at 154 pounds.

However, Spence quickly joined the conversation to share some truth, which his nickname suggests he does. “You dreaming, [I] haven’t heard from anyone [in] months..,” Spence Jr. wrote. It’s currently unclear whether the Spence vs. Fundora fight would actually happen or not, as December creeps closer.

Regardless, Golden Boy honcho has already pitched a big second fight for Spence Jr. in 2025.

Oscar De La Hoya offers Vergil Ortiz Jr as a prospective opponent for Errol Spence Jr.

After the reports of Spence and Fundora came to light, Oscar hopped on X back on October 21st to offer Spence a fight against his top fighter, Vergil Ortiz Jr. at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. “@VergilOrtiz vs @ErrolSpenceJr cowboy stadium next year,” De La Hoya wrote. Some time has passed since then.  Boxing journalist Dan Rafael recently disclosed that Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez informed him about ongoing negotiations for a fight between Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Jaron Ennis. The bout is reportedly set to take place at 154 pounds on February 22, as part of a Riyadh Season card.

If Errol Spence Jr. faces Sebastian Fundora and secures a victory, while Ortiz Jr. manages to overcome Ennis, it could pave the way for an electrifying title clash between Spence and Ortiz Jr. soon. This potential matchup would undoubtedly be a blockbuster event in boxing folklore.

That being said, according to Spence’s latest comment on the fight against Sebastian Fundora, it doesn’t seem the fight would happen anytime soon. This puts Spence in a precarious position, as he awaits his future in the sport. What do you make of the situation?
