Jermall Charlo hasn’t fought in over nine months, so his comeback against Armando Resendiz for the WBA super middleweight belt quickly excited fans. The pair was set to face off as the co-main event of David Benavidez vs. Zurdo Ramirez on May 2 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, as part of the PBC-promoted event on Amazon Prime. However, is that fight still happening?
“NOT SO FAST! This is wrong,” veteran boxing journalist Dan Rafael shared on X. “Resendiz will defend the title on this card vs. Jaime Munguia, per [a] source directly involved. Deal literally wrapped up today. Nothing [happened to Charlo]. [The fight] was never made. [It] was just a possibility despite some reports.”

It’s worth mentioning that ESPN had initially reported that Jermall Charlo would face Resendiz. However, in a later update, the sports media outlet clarified that former super welterweight title holder Jaime Munguia would be replacing Charlo as the opponent. Unlike Rafael, ESPN couldn’t provide a reason behind the withdrawal, simply reporting “undisclosed reasons.”

Talks for a fight between Charlo and Resendiz for the latter’s first title defense began after a fight against Munguia had fallen apart. Notably, Resendiz had defeated Caleb Plant in May last year to become the interim WBA middleweight champion. And after Terence Crawford defeated Canelo Alvarez to become the new full champion, he retired from the sport earlier this year, allowing Resendiz to be upgraded to the status of a full champion.
Jermall Charlo, who was originally touted as the next opponent for Plant, had fought on the same card as Resendiz vs. Plant, securing a sixth-round stoppage over Thomas LaManna. That was his first fight after spending 18 months on the sidelines. As for Jaime Munguia, he hasn’t fought since beating Bruno Surace in a rematch in May.
His win, however, came under jeopardy when a banned substance was found in his system through a post-fight test urinalysis. Although it was later declared a false positive.
Regardless of the reason, Jermall Charlo’s absence is surprising, especially since he had even gotten back with his former trainer.
Jermall Charlo reunites with legendary coach Ronnie Shields
According to a January 2026 report from Boxing Scene, Ronnie Shields confirmed he has started working with Jermall Charlo as the former two-division champion prepared for a comeback. Shields revealed that although they have not yet resumed full training, plans are already in motion.
“I just started working back with Jermall Charlo,” Shields said. “We haven’t started working together yet, but he called me, and he wants to come back.”
Shields is no stranger to Charlo and his brother Jermell Charlo, having trained them to world title wins. And he was optimistic about achieving their past success.
“We started from the very beginning and won championships together,” he said. “We are trying to revisit that. You never lose what you had—you just got to get it back.”
While this suggests Jermall Charlo was ready to return, Dan Rafael’s tweet indicates PBC failed to make the fight happen.
