If you ever thought boxing was more than just business to Floyd Mayweather, his latest Instagram post will set the record straight. The five-division champion just finished his exhibition bout against the former New York Crime Family Boss’ grandson John Gotti III, which was akin to any other fight for him—all in all, just a simple business transaction.

Not only that, his exhibitions against social media stars like Deji, Logan Paul, and others were all business transactions, which have, let’s face it, brought him millions. And you know what? ‘Money’ Mayweather has compared himself and his exhibitions to the likes of billionaires, like Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, and Warren Buffet and their empires, to prove his point.

Floyd Mayweather redefines retirement

Earlier today, the richest boxer in the world stated in an Instagram post, “Retirement isn’t about slowing down, it’s about living on your own terms.” In his message, ‘Money’ emphasized the hard work and effort he has invested in creating a life that allows him the freedom to choose his own adventures. He pointed out that while the ability to chart his own path is the main goal, the fact that these pursuits continue to generate substantial financial rewards is an appreciated bonus.

He further elaborated that success isn’t something a person like him retires from, “it’s something you refine. Exhibitions are my way of giving my fans, old and new, the opportunity to witness my greatness on any stage I choose.” This is exactly what Mayweather feels any successful businessman and boss would do.

“It’s okay for Jeff Bezos, who is 60, Bill Gates at 68, and Warren Buffett at 93, to continuously build their legacies and wealth, and they’re celebrated as smart businessmen,” he wrote. However, Mayweather claimed when he does the same through his exhibition matches, “somehow it becomes a problem for naysayers with nothing to their name.”

Mayweather finally concluded by addressing his critics, stating that too many people are overly concerned with monitoring his financial success. He emphasized that instead of being distracted by others’ opinions, he remains focused on continuing to create wealth and build a lasting legacy. While Mayweather does that, his old rival has pleaded with him to stop with the exhibition fights. In his opinion, they are a “s**tshow.”

Oscar De La Hoya asks Floyd to stop embarrassing himself

Oscar De La Hoya has publicly urged Floyd Mayweather to stop putting on exhibition bouts, calling them an “embarrassment” to his legacy. Reflecting on Mayweather vs. Gotti III rematch, Oscar said, “[It was] a real s**t show that left the crowd booing in the arena at the end.” Despite retiring with a perfect 50-0 record in 2017, Mayweather has continued to fight in exhibition matches, the latest being an uneventful bout against John Gotti III on August 24.

De La Hoya, who fought Mayweather in 2007, took to Instagram to express his concerns, stating, “Floyd, you’re 50 years old. You’re a legend in this sport… but you have to stop embarrassing yourself with these exhibitions.” He criticized the recent match, noting that Mayweather even had the referee swapped mid-fight for disagreeing with him. “It was so embarrassing,” De La Hoya added, emphasizing that Mayweather should prioritize his legacy over these shows.

It appears despite what people like Oscar De La Hoya say about Floyd’s exhibition fights, the five-division champion doesn’t intend to stop anytime soon. If anything, his statement on social media today suggests that people should expect another exhibition soon. What do you think about Floyd Mayweather’s exhibition fights?
