Five-division world champion Floyd Mayweather is known for his unparalleled in-ring abilities. However, he couldn’t touch current WBC champion Devin Haney in a sparring session, almost four years back.

Devin Haney’s father William Haney recalled the sparring session and revealed how Floyd Mayweather failed to dominate a 17-year-old Devin Haney when the two collided in sparring. It was before Mayweather’s return against Conor McGregor, and Mayweather sparred with several youngsters at his gym.

One of them was Devin Haney. While Haney was already a professional back then, he displayed his skills against one of the best. ‘The Dream’ alongside his father connected with Million Dollaz Worth of the Game podcast to talk about it.

“He was in there with Floyd. Nobody wanna talk about it but it was right before the Conor McGregor fight, he was like 17 or 18 and Floyd couldn’t touch him. Listen, Floyd didn’t touch him and Devin touched Floyd up,” said William Haney.

However, WBC champion Haney didn’t see it as a competition. Instead, he looked at it as an opportunity and expressed his gratitude towards Mayweather for giving him the chance.

‘The Dream’ added, “For me personally, I just thank Floyd for even giving me the opportunity to say that I’ve been in the ring with him. Even though it was at the end of his career, just for me to be able to say I sparred Floyd. He didn’t have to do that. I was a young kid and he was somebody that I always looked up to and someone that I always watched.”

What’s next for Floyd Mayweather and Devin Haney?

Mayweather, 43, will return to action in a special exhibition bout against YouTuber turned boxer Logan Paul on February 20 at the Tokyo Dome. Since fighting Nasukawa in 2018, Mayweather hasn’t fought anyone. So, his upcoming fight will attract a lot of interest from the entire boxing world.

Meanwhile, Devin Haney is yet to receive his next fight since outpointing Yuriorkis Gamboa in a successful WBC title defense. Although he has called out unified champion Teofimo Lopez via social media, the fight isn’t confirmed. However, 2021 looks like a promising year for the sport, and ‘The Dream’ can expect some big fights very soon.
