During the last WBC convention in Mexico, Canelo’s trainer Eddy Reynoso petitioned the WBC for the Canelo vs Makabu fight. The WBC agreed to this bout and it will take place next year. Five division world champion, Floyd Mayweather, shared his thoughts on the impending contest.

Mayweather feels Canelo is ducking David Benavidez by moving up in weight classes. Per Michael Benson, ‘Money’ said: “Canelo’s a helluva fighter, but in my personal opinion he’s ducking David Benavidez… Do I like this [Ilunga Makabu] fight? Absolutely not. We wanna see Benavidez.”

For Canelo, it’s all about making history. On November 6 he made history against Caleb Plant, becoming the first-ever ‘undisputed’ Super-middleweight champion. However, he is not content, and now, Canelo is looking to join an elite group of fighters by becoming a five-division world champion.

David Benavidez, on the other hand, put on an impressive performance in his win over Kyrone Davis a few weeks ago. However, Benavidez does not have anything to offer to Canelo except a tough fight.

While Alvarez is chasing history, ‘El Bandera Roja’ is just chasing Canelo. But this is one fight that could take place in the future, depending on what happens in Canelo’s fight against Makabu.

Canelo Alvarez does not rule out a shot at Heavyweight

In his long boxing career, Canelo Alvarez has moved up quite a few weight classes. In fact, he is only one of four Mexican fighters to win a world title in four divisions. Although earlier Canelo seemed reluctant to move up to Cruiserweight, he has decided to pack on the pounds for a shot at history.

However, when asked about whether he would ever move up to Heavyweight, Canelo seemed reluctant again. That said, he did not completely rule it out. “I think a year ago I said no to cruiserweight and here we are,” said Alvarez at the WBC convention. “Therefore I don’t think so. But I don’t know with Eddy sometimes. But I don’t think so. My body wouldn’t allow that to happen.”
