Recently, Oscar De La Hoya confirmed that Floyd Mayweather Sr. was willing to train him against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs Oscar De La Hoya is one of the highest-selling PPVs in boxing history. The event generated around $130 million in revenue, one of the highest at that time.

During the buildup, Mayweather Sr. offered to train Oscar for a whopping $2 million. Unfortunately, the price was just too high for Oscar. Many experts speculated that Mayweather Sr. did not want to go against his son. Therefore, he quoted a high fee.

Eventually, ‘The Golden Boy’ hired Freddie Roach. On the other hand, Mayweather Jr. trained with his late uncle, Roger Mayweather. Oscar confirmed the story on Brian Campbell’s ‘State of Combat’ podcast on CBS Sports.

“That was actually very true,” De La Hoya said of Mayweather Sr.’s desire to train him for that fight. “We didn’t come to terms with the money, and that’s what derailed our plan. But Floyd Sr. was willing to train me to beat his son.”

Mayweather Jr. edged a split decision win over Oscar De La Hoya. Nevertheless, he reunited with Mayweather Sr. after the fight. With the elder Mayweather’s guidance, Oscar defeated Steve Forbes a year later.

But he would soon retire after his loss to the Flipino, Manny Pacquiao. It is to be noted that Mayweather Sr. did not train Oscar for his fight against Pacquiao, as he was busy training Ricky Hatton.

Oscar De La Hoya holds Floyd Mayweather Sr. in high regard.

“You know why?” De La Hoya said of why they worked well together. “Because he didn’t take no sh*t from me. Mayweather Sr. would tell me in my face, directly, like, ‘You’re gonna do this. You’re gonna do that. If you don’t wanna do it, then I’m out of here.’ And I respected him. And that’s who Floyd Mayweather Sr. was.”
