Coming into the fight, Berto was the huge underdog who nobody expected to win. Although Berto did seem confident that he could hand Money his first ever loss in professional boxing. Moreover, leading up to the fight, there was an expected victory in tennis as Roberta Vinci defeated Serena Williams in the US Open Semifinals. However, in what could be described as a bad omen, the former champ failed to recognize Williams’ conqueror.

The time Berto did not recognize Roberta Vinci

Just like Berto, Vinci was the underdog in her match. Despite that, she overcame Williams, beating her 2-6, 6-4, and 6-4 to prevent Williams from winning the calendar Grand Slam. Vinci got the upset victory even though she had 300 to 1 odds against her winning the tournament. This could have been the hope Berto needed to beat one of the greatest boxers of all time.

However, when Berto was asked about Vinci’s shocking upset at the weigh-ins by Showtime commentator Jim Gray, he had no answer. He did not recognize the tennis wizard’s staggering victory. Moreover, Berto even took shots at money, questioning his intelligence. He stated that the reason why Mayweather had so much fiat cash was that he did not know how to write checks.

This would not prove to be a wise decision by the former welterweight champion as Mayweather comfortably beat him in the fight. Money outboxed Berto for the whole 12-rounds winning via UD. He scored 117-111, 118-110, and 120-110 on the judge’s scorecard, indicating a dominant performance.

Following this, Mayweather would only compete once professionally against Conor McGregor in 2017. He retired from professional boxing and only competed in exhibition bouts after this. He has fought his former sparring partner Don Moore and Logan Paul in exhibition matches and looks to make his return to Japan for his next fight.
