Floyd Mayweather’s Protege Gervonta Davis Criticized for “Cherry-Picking” Opponents

26-year-old Gervonta Davis has attained an exceptional professional resume of 25-0 in less than a decade. Furthermore, three-division world championships rightly complement the stats, touting the Baltimore native as one of the biggest names in boxing today.

However, Davis hasn’t fought several of his contemporaries, and not everyone is applauding the American star’s achievements. Coming from Floyd Mayweather’s stable, “Tank” might have avoided a scrap with Garry Russel Jr. for a long time.

Although he has constantly beaten A-listed champions, Russel Jr. believes that Davis needs to overpower him to prove his worth. Akin to his several other interviews, Russel Jr. once again desired a shot at Davis in interaction with Fight HUB TV. He also shed opinion on Tank facing Mario Barrios to become a three-division champion in June.

“I thought it was a strategic fight. It was strategized and it almost f*** backfired. It was a real strategy fight, and it was almost backfired. They are cherry-picking, they are cherry-picking. What I mean by that is they picking the easiest task or easiest fight is,” said Garry Russel Jr.

However, Davis’ win over Barrios opened up the door to several potential matchups, with certain twists in the tale. Floyd Mayweather outlined his protégé’s future in the sport, which clearly raised several eyebrows. The retired boxer insisted on staging Davis only against PBC boxers, keeping the entire revenue in-house.

So, it ruled away several potential matchups for Gervonta Davis, starting from Josh Taylor to Teofimo Lopez. But Garry Russel Jr. is with PBC and might face Davis in the future.

‘Mr.’ Garry Russel Jr, 31-1, is currently the WBC featherweight champion with six successful title defenses under his belt. So, he is clearly a top-tier figure, but constantly hunting for a blockbuster matchup.

He has desired to rematch Vasyl Lomachenko in the past, but ‘The Matrix’ has ignored it so far. Meanwhile, Davis has vacated his featherweight title. So, Russel Jr. cannot afford to stop exploring other names. He has his mandatory title contenders, but a blockbuster fight can still be a bit far. Thus, it is not all glory for him at this time.
