Things were going pretty well for the stacked card for the Vergil Ortiz Jr. vs. Erickson Lubin fight on November 8 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth. However, things took a turn when reports revealed that Floyd Schofield Jr., who was supposed to face Joseph ‘Jo Jo’ Diaz on the co-main event, was forced to withdraw from the fight due to a Grade 2 sprain to his right wrist, including minor ligament damage.

Golden Boy Promotions revealed in a statement that the decision was made after “medical evaluation and on the advice of his team.” However, now that the 23-year-old Austin, Texas native has managed to withdraw from a fight a second time this year, it begs the question: What’s next for ‘Kid Austin’? As it turns out, Floyd Schofield Jr. himself has the answer to that question, as he revealed his return date recently.

Floyd Schofield Jr. shows his hand injury

Earlier today, Ring Magazine shared a clip from ‘Kid Austin,’ offering fans a first look at the injury that forced the 23-year-old Floyd Schofield out of his upcoming fight with Joseph Diaz Jr. The video showed Schofield’s hand marked with three visible red welts and his arm appearing slightly swollen. Ring Magazine captioned the Instagram post, “Floyd Schofield shares the wrist injury that forced him out of his scheduled fight with Jojo Diaz Jr.” Meanwhile, the caption on the clip itself revealed his expected return timeline.

“Sorry fans. See you in February,” the caption read. At this stage, it remains unclear who the undefeated lightweight will face next. There’s a chance his clash with Diaz could be rescheduled since the bout was pulled from the card entirely, rather than Diaz being assigned a replacement opponent. However, Golden Boy Promotions has not yet issued any confirmation in that regard.

It’s worth remembering that Schofield also withdrew from his scheduled fight with Shakur Stevenson in February this year, citing a sudden illness that left him bedridden in a hospital. Stevenson went on to face Josh Padley instead and later dismissed Schofield’s explanation, insisting he would never give him a second opportunity. For his latest withdrawal, however, Schofield Jr.’s father appears to have an explanation ready.

Schofield Sr. says divine intervention saved ‘Jo Jo’ Diaz

Initially, fans on social media accused Schofield Jr. of making excuses like in the Stevenson fight. But the 23-year-old’s father, Floyd Schofield Sr., had an interesting take on his son’s withdrawal from the Joseph Diaz bout. And believe it or not, he thinks “God” himself stopped the fight from happening. Speaking to Fight Hype, he said, “I feel God protected ‘Jo Jo.’”

“I swear to goodness, ‘Jo Jo’ is really spiritual, and I think God intervened and allowed ‘Jo Jo’ to have a safe passage on to his next fight.” For Schofield Sr., his son’s injury was nothing short of a “freak accident.” He added, “So I say for that to be that much of a freak accident, God just helped ‘Jo Jo.’ Everybody else could say what they want, but ‘Jo Jo’ got a free pass. He’s going to have a great fight against somebody else.”

It appears “God” has given Floyd Schofield Jr. a few more months of relaxation before he gets in the ring. While the opponent is a mystery, who would you want the 23-year-old to fight?
