One man stands in the way of a potential showdown between WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson and rising star Floyd Schofield JrOscar De La Hoya, the latter’s promoter. In the meantime, Matchroom honcho and Stevenson’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has announced a 48-hour time frame to confirm a fight between the duo.

You see, Stevenson and Schofield Jr. have been going back and forth for a long time. However, talk of a potential fight between them became red hot when William Zepeda confirmed that he had sustained a forearm injury during his last fight against Tevin Farmer. Zepeda was, of course, Stevenson’s mandatory challenger, and with the injury that fight ain’t happening.

So, Zepeda’s promotional stablemate, Schofield Jr. threw his hat into the mix for Stevenson’s next opponent. Schofield Jr.’s father also demanded a fight should transpire between them on social media while claiming Stevenson hasn’t fought anyone to be considered an A-level fighter. Not to forget, Hearn has previously mentioned that they’ve reached out to GB Promotions to discuss the fight.

However, Oscar De La Hoya criticized this move from Hearn, highlighting that Schofield Jr. didn’t have any experience fighting against a world champion during his recent ‘Clapback Thursday’ segment on social media. Regardless, while appearing in a recent interview with Fight Hub TV, Hearn shared an update on the potential fight, suggesting the next 48 hours will decide whether the fight gets made or not.

“I know that there’s back and forth. And the father [Floyd Schofield Sr.] wants it, the fighter wants it. Obviously, we’re talking to Golden Boy as well. We’ve made them an offer,” Hearn told Fight Hub TV. “For me, Scofield’s been calling out Shakur for a while now. He’s a very talented young fighter. It is a big step up, but at some point, you take a big step up, especially if there’s financial rewards.”

Elaborating on his point, Hearn claimed he can’t guarantee that the fight will get made, “But we have been talking to Golden Boy about numbers around that fight and there is a chance, but we won’t know for the next probably 24, 48 hours.” Meanwhile, Stevenson seems to have shared additional information, which hints at the fight getting closer to reality.

Shakur Stevenson claims he signed a contract to fight Floyd Schofield Jr.

Since Hearn claimed they have sent an offer to GB Promotions for the Schofield Jr. fight, a conversation between the Newark native and a fan on X seems to suggest a fight between Stevenson and Schofield Jr. might just end up happening. The user directly probed Stevenson, “When you gon fight Kid?”

Responding to the fan, Stevenson claimed he had signed a contract for this fight. However, until there’s a confirmation, Stevenson asked the user not to believe anything on social media about the fight. “I signed a contract today for it but ion be believe everything I see on social media who knows what’s what all I can do is my part and I’ll believe it when I see it,” Stevenson wrote.

That being said, it appears Oscar De La Hoya is the only one standing against this fight. While many think Floyd Schofield Jr. might not be able to handle Shakur Stevenson, the potential fight has indeed created quite the buzz around it, and it might be the exact thing Stevenson needs to prove his dominance in the division.
