WBC champion Tyson Fury will return to the United Kingdom to take on Dillian Whyte on April 23 at the Wembley Arena after multiple appearances in the USA. The upcoming fight will be his 33 pro appearance and might be his last, as ‘The Gypsy King’ has already hinted at a potential retirement.

However, that might not be the case. 33-year-old Fury still has a few tests left in the division and can possibly finish them all before calling it a day. That said, Fury’s promoter Frank Warren has already tagged his client as a sporting icon, comparing his status with former heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis.

In a chat with iFL TV, Warren said, “Tyson [Fury] is a sporting superstar now. He is not just a heavyweight boxer, he has crossed over. He is a big name. Big name around the world, he is a big name in America. He has done something no British heavyweight has done since Lennox Lewis.”

Well, Lennox Lewis is the last heavyweight champion to have held all four belts together. Fury should have battled Oleksandr Usyk to attain that status. But Usyk is busy serving his home country Ukraine at the moment. He doesn’t intend to return anytime soon.

Even if he does, a rematch with Anthony Joshua is on the line. That said, Tyson Fury can still postpone his retirement plans and march towards the undisputed fight. He looks favorable to beat Dillian Whyte in the upcoming WBC title defense. After that, the road looks clear to challenge the unified heavyweight champion.

Can Tyson Fury be a bigger icon than Lennox Lewis?

It’s highly arguable whether Fury needs to achieve anything more to be above Lennox Lewis in the list of heavyweight greats. Even if he does, an undisputed title win will clear all doubts. ‘The Gypsy King’ is undefeated in his career, something which Lewis cannot claim.

Meanwhile, Fury had the privilege of social media fame and has arguably become a more popular name than ‘Lion’ Lewis all over the world. So, Fury can consider remaining active after battling Whyte. It will also be a smart move to enrich his pockets even better.
