From Track and Field to Professional Boxing, Who is Joe Joyce?

Joe Joyce is slowly becoming a household name in the world of boxing. The undefeated heavyweight has steadily made his mark on the division.

And after a tough fight against Michael Wallisch, Joyce will step into the ring again in 2020. However, this time it is a much tougher test against Daniel ‘Dynamite’ Dubois. So, let us look into who exactly is Joe Joyce?

The undefeated fighter made a relatively late switch to the sport of boxing. His early interest lay in track and field while pursuing his degree in Fine Arts.

However, re-current Achilles injuries cut that dream short, and at 22, he made the switch to boxing. Due to this, the Juggernaut’s career progression has not followed the typical trend.

He spent all his 20s fighting as an amateur boxer when most would be turning professional.

Despite this late switch, Joyce enjoyed enormous success at the amateur level. He won gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, as well as the 2015 European Games in the super-heavyweight category.

Joyce also fulfilled his lifelong goal of winning an Olympic medal. He won silver in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. The multi-talented fighter also won a bronze at the World Championships in 2015.

So success has followed Joyce in all walks of life. However, winning an Olympic medal and having a degree in Fine Arts did not satisfy the Englishman. As a result, in 2017, he made the switch to professional boxing at the ripe old age of 31.

Joe Joyce; professional boxing success

Despite the late switch to the professional game, Joyce was seasoned in the competitive atmosphere. He made the seamless switch and headlined his debut event.

He has since gone on an unbeaten run of 11-0 with 10 of those being shut out victories. And in justification to his nickname, 8 of those 10 knockouts have come in the first half of the fights.

Clearly, Joe Joyce has it all. With a decorated amateur career, a degree in Fine Arts, and on course to make his mark on the professional scene, it seems that nothing will deter the 35-year-old.

He also has the mental strength to cope with it all having to deal with the injury struggles in the past. The heavyweight world champion is the next thing on the Juggernaut’s agenda, and victory against Daniel Dubois will be vital to achieving that.
