

The Kazakhstan legend, Gennady Golovkin, became the unified IBF, IBO, and WBA middleweight champion on Saturday night. He reclaimed the titles by stopping the Japanese stalwart Ryota Murata with a right cross in the 9th round of an epic action-packed slugfest.
With his victory, the middleweight king marked another milestone in the history of sports.

At the age when most boxers retire from the sport, Gennady Golovkin emerged as a diamond. One day after turning 40, ‘Triple G’ joined the former champion at middleweight and the Hall of Famer Bernard Hopkins.

Notably, at 49, Hopkins has unified light heavyweight titles in 2014 by outclassing Beibut Shumenov.

The Japanese boxer stepped inside the ring in with all guns blazing amid the home crowd. He succeeded in initial rounds and landed a few lethal combinations that pushed Golovkin back.
He caught ‘Triple G’ with his right-hand several times, while the latter took time to get into the rhythm.

Everything was going well for Murata till Golovkin unloaded devastating punches from different angles in the 5th round.
However, starting slowly, the 40-year-old turned the tables as he caught Murata with a right hook that pushed the latter on the ropes. Golovkin sensed a knockout victory. He regained his old charisma and tore apart Murata in the center of the ring.

Badly hurt, Murata could not survive back-to-back wounds and his legs stumbled in the 7th and 8th rounds. Though he fought back, he could not escape Golovkin’s killing instinct and finally succumbed to the right cross.
