Who is Calvin Ford? Gervonta Davis’s head coach and father figure
Gervonta Davis should count himself fortunate to have stumbled upon the hidden gems of the boxing world: Calvin Ford and Kenny Ellis. Davis holds his coach, Calvin Ford, in the highest regard. It was only at the beginning of this year that he took to Instagram to share that he has even tattooed coach Calvin’s name on him—that is how deep their relationship runs. He revealed, “Calvin is pops. He ain’t going nowhere.”

From the tender age of seven, Tank trained at their Upton Boxing Center in West Baltimore, under Ford’s watchful eye. By 2012, he had already racked up an impressive 206 wins in the amateur ranks, including multiple National Golden Gloves and Junior Olympics gold medals. Later, when he turned pro at just 18 in 2013, the world quickly saw the ferocity in Tank’s fists. And alongside coach Calvin, there was Kenny Ellis to build Tank Davis into the powerhouse he is today. With two different personalities and two contrasting styles, Tank became the perfect fusion of both men’s wisdom. But who’s training him for the Jake Paul fight? Here’s what we know.

Gervonta Davis’ training camp for Jake Paul exhibition fight
Calvin Ford and Kenny Ellis hail from opposite backgrounds. Ellis, a former boxer, came from a stable two-parent home, while Ford, a former member of the Boardley-Burrows drug organization, was raised in the tough streets of West Baltimore. Ford’s journey led him through a 10-year stretch in prison, while Ellis found his inspiration in boxing. However, together they taught Gervonta Davis more than just how to throw punches, and yes, they are involved in ‘Tank’s training for the Jake Paul fight.

Gervonta Davis’s coaches have always shared their opinion when it comes to his fight contracts and the provisions in that document. And guess what? One of the two coaches has shared some concerns regarding his upcoming fight. It appears that Calvin Ford is not satisfied with the gloves that will be used for the Jake Paul fight on Netflix.
Calvin Ford’s concerns about 10-ounce gloves for Davis vs Paul
Since the Gervonta Davis vs Jake Paul fight is an exhibition, the size of the gloves is going to be bigger. The contract claims that they will be 10 ounces, but coach Calvin Ford wants them to be 8 ounces. Why? Well, 10 ounces are usually used in training so as not to hurt anybody while sparring. Davis’s coach has no qualms with what Paul wants to do, because he wants the same for his fighter.

“My only concern is the gloves because we don’t fight in 12 oz gloves, we don’t use 12 oz gloves, that’s training gloves,” Calvin Ford stated in an interview earlier this month. “So my thing is, ‘put Tank in eights, put (Jake) in tens.’ That makes the fight more interesting, and we’ll go from there. And I brought that up to one of his handlers and they say ‘no, we don’t want to do no mix and match.’ It’s supposed to be an exhibition.”

We’ll see how things pan out when it comes to those demands. But let’s turn our attention to the promotion side of things. Since Davis left Mayweather promotions, fans may not be aware of who he’s teamed up with now. So, let’s find out who ‘Tank’s new promoters are.

Who is Gervonta Davis’ promoter and manager now?
Even though Al Haymon’s PBC still promotes Gervonta Davis, after parting ways with Mayweather Promotions in 2022, the boxing star has taken control of his own career as the head of his own promotional company, Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis or GTD Promotions. The 30-0 boxer assumes the role of CEO, with Ravone Littlejohn serving as the president of GTD Promotions, who, along with the PBC, orchestrates all of Davis’ fights.
Ravone Littlejohn and Gervonta Davis were also spotted together at their last press conference, ahead of ‘Tank’s highly anticipated fight against Jake Paul on November 14, marking an exciting new chapter in Davis’ career. With that said, what do you think about his journey? But on a more serious note, who do you think will win the Netflix exhibition fight, Davis or Paul? Drop your comments below.
