In an era where dream fights are finally coming true like it’s the ’80s all over again, there’s one matchup that’s playing harder to get than your high school crush—it’s practically rocket science at this point! You see, WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis is coming off the worst performance of his career against rival WBA super featherweight champion Lamont Roach Jr

The pair squared off in New York on March 1, producing one of the most entertaining bouts of the year thus far. What was supposed to be an easy hurdle for the Baltimore native turned out to be the toughest challenge of his career. ‘The Reaper’ went toe-to-toe with Davis, forcing a majority decision draw.

Besides the shocking end to the fight, the no-knockdown ruling sent shockwaves throughout the boxing world. The pair is currently rumored to lock horns on June 21, but there’s no confirmation about the fight. While the Davis vs. Roach fight’s fate is in the air, WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson has delayed his potential fight against Davis further.

Recently, the Newark native confirmed his next opponent, meaning a potential Davis fight will have to wait. “Zepeda,” Stevenson responded on X when asked about his next opponent. This comes after the WBC ordered Stevenson to defend his title against William Zepeda. The pair was originally supposed to fight early this year, but Zepeda claimed he injured his arm during his first fight against Tevin Farmer

Despite that, Zepeda went on to fight Farmer a second time, defending his ‘Interim’ WBC belt. Nonetheless, Stevenson’s promoter has shed more light on when the Davis fight could happen.

Eddie Hearn has a plan to deal with Gervonta Davis for the Shakur Stevenson fight

With Stevenson’s last fight under the Matchroom Boxing banner expected to be against William Zepeda, Eddie Hearn seems to have laid out a plan to keep Stevenson with his company by putting together a fight against Gervonta Davis. Speaking during the Jaron Ennis vs. Eimantas Stanionis press conference, Hearn revealed that the immediate focus is on making Stevenson vs. William Zepeda happen.

“Negotiations have been ordered by the WBC for Shakur to fight [interim lightweight champion William] Zepeda,” Hearn told DAZN. “We’ve been speaking to Eric Gomez, Oscar De La Hoya, and the team at Golden Boy. Everybody wants the fight.” Hearn emphasized the significance of the matchup: “It’s the perfect fight for everybody… a tremendous fight between two fantastic fighters.”

According to Hearn, a summer showdown with Zepeda is the priority before talks with Davis begin. “We believe Shakur Stevenson is the best lightweight in the world… Get that fight done, and then deal with Tank,” he added.
