WBO super lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez just dropped a doozy on social media. The 27-year-old is currently in talks with IBF welterweight champion Jaron Ennis for a bout at 154 pounds. However, since the update came to life, ‘The Takeover’ has shared a sparring clip on Instagram, which has left fans guessing who his opponent in the clip is.

The sparring footage is about six years old, and Lopez’s opponent is wearing headgear, making it hard to identify him. While the footage is available on YouTube, there are no official records identifying Lopez’s sparring partner. What is clear, however, is that the session took place at the Mayweather Boxing Club, which has sparked numerous educated guesses about the identity of his opponent.

Teofimo Lopez stirs the pot amid feud with Gervonta Davis

Earlier today, Lopez hopped on Instagram to share the clip in question with the caption reading, “Couldn’t mesh with us then & you won’t mesh with us NOW!” It’s worth noting that Lopez recently became part of a back-and-forth with WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis

This came after Lopez had made some racist comments towards Gervonta Davis and Terence Crawford while calling them out for a fight in a podcast appearance on Broadway Joel. “Whichever monkey wants to get the banana,” he said when asked which of the two he would fight first.

“They say they are gorillas, I’m a lion, I eat them,” Lopez also added. While Crawford had already addressed the situation in October, it took Davis a while to respond. During his press conference for the March 1 fight against Lamont Roach, Davis said, “I’m gonna slap the s**t out of him when I see him.”

Lopez and his father had welcomed the idea, claiming they would like to see Davis deliver on his promise. While the feud with Davis and the sparring footage might not be connected, it’s interesting that Lopez chose to share the sparring footage from Floyd Mayweather’s gym. For context, Mayweather was Davis’ mentor and former promoter.

Regardless, since the sparring footage came to light, many commented on the post trying to guess who the opponent could be.

Could it be Ryan Garcia?

As you may have guessed, fans went insane with their guesses. One user was sure about one thing, so probed Lopez further. “He is not ‘Tank,’” the user wrote, asking, “who is he?” Since Lopez chose to remain mysterious about it—who the opponent is can be anybody’s guess.

Meanwhile, the next user seemed confident about who the opponent was. “That’s Ryan Garcia look at em 😭🤣🤦🏾‍♂️,” the user commented. However, it’s worth mentioning that there’s no evidence confirming that.

Another user claimed they knew who the opponent was. “Lol, that is Waseem he is sparring. He is a flyweight. You can find the full video on YT,” the user wrote. While a longer clip is available on YouTube, the uploader didn’t confirm that the opponent was Waseem—though some comments on YouTube claimed the fighter was super bantamweight Muhammad Waseem.

Amid all this, the next user expressed his desire to watch Lopez fight again. “Y’all still sleeping on Teo?? Can’t wait to see him in another big fight,” the user wrote. Lopez has already fought twice in 2024—the first was against Jamaine Ortiz and the second against Steve Claggett

The next user took a dig at Lopez, asking him to avenge his only loss. “But Kambosos beat you get a rematch,” the user wrote. Interestingly, Lopez caused a huge upset in 2020 when defeated Vasyl Lomachenko, but in his next fight, George Kambosos Jr. caused an upset by defeating him.

It appears only Teofimo Lopez and his team know for sure who he was sparring in the clip. The chances of it being Ryan Garcia or Gervonta Davis are very low, which has caused so much speculation. Who do you think Lopez’s sparring partner is?
