30-1 as a professional, Saunders is still a legitimate threat to the 168 lbs contenders. While he may have to wait for some time before re-shooting for a championship bout, Saunders is rightly relevant in the mix. Looking at the ongoing scenario, the 31-year-old can wait for Canelo Alvarez vs Caleb Plant to resurrect his spot.

What’s next for Billy Joe Saunders?

Already a two-weight class champion, Saunders seems to suffer a medical suspension for the time. He has contracted severe injuries and will have to take a long lay off before getting into the boxing rhythm.

Meanwhile, Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant can settle the dust for the unified super middleweight championship. Once it’s over, the unified titlist can aim for new contenders. Thus Saunders can still expect a title shot in the near future. But he might have to go for a non-title bout to remain active and heal up the recent loss.
