Former number-one contender Edgar Berlanga just called out the new undisputed light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev to a fight. ‘The Chosen One’ is coming off a unanimous decision loss to former undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez, which largely was a one-sided affair—as many predicted.

Meanwhile, the 39-year-old had to survive 12 rounds with former WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol, who even defeated Canelo Alvarez back in 2022. On paper, the fight against the Puerto Rican would be a walk in the park for Beterbiev. Still, it didn’t stop Berlanga from making the bold statement on X—all while misspelling Beterbiev’s name and insulting his IQ.

Edgar Berlanga promises a knockout

Turning to X, the Brooklyn-born boxer wrote, “I would stand toe to toe with author and knock him out. No IQ no head movement.” Interestingly, just last month, after Daniel Dubois defeated Anthony Joshua in a shock performance, Berlanga had claimed he would move to heavyweight and fight ‘AJ,’ which, as you might have guessed, was met with ridicule from boxing fans.

All the comments on that post didn’t seem to have taught Berlanga the lesson, so he decided to make this outrageous claim. While it’s not far-fetched for Berlanga to move from 168-pounds to 175-pounds, his last performance didn’t fill people with confidence. Needless to say, after discovering Berlanga’s tweet, fans ripped Berlanga apart.

Fan claims Berlanga doesn’t have the chin to fight Artur Beterbiev

While such tweets keep Berlanga in the limelight, the responses were mostly derogatory, mocking Berlanga. Like this user, who suggested if Berlanga fought Artur Beterbiev, it would end in a back-to-back losing streak. “Breh you really wanna go back to back on a loser world tour huh,” mocked the user. Notably, Berlanga was called out by Caleb Plant for a fight but hasn’t responded yet.

Meanwhile, this user decided to remain respectful with his comment, but his opinion mirrored everyone else’s. “Respectfully, You don’t have the chin. Bivol took his best shots,” Even while fighting Canelo, Berlanga went down like a sack of potatoes in the fourth round of the fight.

Unlike the previous user, this user didn’t hold back his words. “Shut your b***h a** up you’re all talk. You were tryna survive against Canelo and have low boxing IQ,” the user lambasted. In fact, Canelo was the first major fight Berlanga has ever been in.

Someone else thought Berlanga’s tweet was induced by CTE. “Bro had 1 title fight and already got cte,” the user commented sarcastically. CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) is caused by repeated blows to the head. A prevalent disease among boxers, CTE is manifested with symptoms like chronic headaches, memory loss, insomnia, confusion, and disorientation.

The next user condemned Berlanga for commenting on Artur Beterbiev’s boxing IQ while highlighting how Berlanga misspelled Artur’s name. “Making fine of a man’s IQ while spelling Artur as author is such a Berlanga move,” the user wrote. However, even the user seems to have made a mistake in writing ‘fun.’

Edgar Berlanga doesn’t appear to have the backing of a dedicated fanbase that rallies behind his every social media call-out like some boxers. While a fight against Artur Beterbiev isn’t out of the question, it seems unlikely to materialize at this time. What are your thoughts on Berlanga’s recent tweet?
