“He Needed So Much Time to Develop”- Anthony Joshua Opens Up About Tyson Fury’s Career

Despite not conceding a single loss throughout his career, many did not look at Tyson Fury as a future champion. Anthony Joshua, while in conversation with Chris Mannix during the Sports Illustrated boxing podcast revealed that he used to feel the same way.

AJ feels that boxers often need time to settle in and grow. Several boxers are late bloomers and it takes them a considerable about of time to reach their full potential.

“He has surprised me, but I believe that every fighter needs time to develop. And I say like Tyson Fury’s been professional now like what … 11 years, going on 12 years. He needed so much time to develop,” said Anthony Joshua while talking about The Gypsy King

The newly minted WBC heavyweight champion is coming off a win against Deontay Wilder. However, what stands out about the fight is the fact that Fury did not just beat Wilder, he overwhelmed him. By applying the right amount of pressure and physicality he managed to force Wilder’s cornermen to throw in the towel.

“So, I just reflect [on] that. When I was studying these guys, Tyson Fury, when I was coming through, and I looked at my career and I said, Whoa! I’ve done what it took him 10 years to do in three years. Imagine where I’m gonna be in 10 years,” said Joshua as he compares his growth throughout his career to that of Fury.

The “little issue” in question here marks the only imperfection in AJ’s otherwise impeccable record. Getting knocked down four times and eventually conceding his first career loss to Andy Ruiz Jr. by way of TKO.

“So, I keep on moving through. I get that I had my little issue with the Ruiz thing last year. But as I always say, another six years from now, when I’m where Tyson Fury is, I should be unstoppable because experience and wisdom is one of the greatest teachers,” said Joshua as he claims that he is soaking up information about the boxing circuit and the people in it.

Following his loss, he took on Ruiz late last year and managed to outbox him. Eventually reclaiming his IBF, IBO, WBA, and WBO championships in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia.

As things stand now, Joshua is looking to take on Kubrat Pulev as a mandatory title defense. Ahead of the Coronavirus epidemic, the fighters were hoping to go toe to toe on June 20th at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.
