Former British-Irish boxer Matthew Macklin (35-6-0) had some pretty harsh words for Deontay Wilder (41-1-1).

‘Mack The Knife’ appeared in an interview with iFL TV, wherein he gave his views on the Fury vs Wilder rematch.

He gave a vivid description of what he feels the future holds for ‘The Bronze Bomber’. While many believe that Wilder will bounce back stronger, Macklin feels otherwise.

Wilder has been silent about his loss at the hands of ‘The Gypsy King’. Even though there are several rumors revolving around the fight, Wilder has not issued any clarifications.

Considering the fact that his silence could be the signs of a mental beat-down, the interviewer asked Macklin whether it is possible that Wilder is facing one. Macklin said,

“I think he probably is. [Fury] took his soul away. He backed him up and busted him up, he manhandled him. He wrecked him on the inside and he bullied him.”

Well, the fight did become the only blot on Wilder’s otherwise stellar career. Moreover, Fury completely dominated the fight, putting unimaginable pressure on Wilder. Thus, the first loss in a career of 41 wins coming in such a fashion could not have been easy to swallow.

Matthew Macklin backs Mark Breland for saving Deontay Wilder

The fight between Fury and Wilder stopped when Wilder’s head trainer, Mark Breland, threw in the towel [7th round]. As soon as Wilder realized what had happened, he blasted at his trainer, demanding a justification.

However, a few days later, Wilder stated that Breland was just doing his job and that he would train with him again. Thus, he did away with all statements regarding his anger at Breland.

Everyone in the boxing fraternity also thought that Breland made the right choice. Adding his own opinion about the matter, Macklin said,

“There was no fight left in [Wilder]. Mark Breland was spot on. The fight had been knocked out of him.”

Macklin gives his verdict for the trilogy

Macklin also dealt with the question that runs on everyone’s minds today. Can Wilder avenge his loss at the hands of Fury?

Many, including Fury himself, believe that Wilder will come back stronger and better. However, Matthew follows the alternate school of thought. He said,

“Can he improve on that? I don’t know that he can. I don’t think he can.”

Matthew even said that Wilder would have fared much better had he accepted the offer to step-down. As soon as he lost the fight, many in the industry wanted to materialize a title-unification bout between Fury and Anthony Joshua.

For this, the promoters of both the champions offered both Wilder and Kubrat Pulev (AJ’s next mandatory opponent) money to step aside and let the title unification take place. However, Deontay Wilder is only looking for revenge and rejected the offer to stand down.

Macklin said,

“There was talk of step aside money. And Pulev getting step aside money. Going straight into a Joshua-Fury. I think Wilder should have done that! Because, I think, Wilder needs a few fights to get his confidence back before going back in with Fury. If he goes straight back in there with Fury? I’m expecting the same outcome as last time. Maybe even worse.”
