Throwback to March 2018, Luis Nery was banned by the Japan Boxing Commission. This was because he weighed three pounds over and above his designated weight during his fight against Shinsuke Yamanaka, which took place in Kyoto. The fight? Well, he won via an impressive stoppage victory. Now, according to sources, after more than 5 years, the Mexican is set to make his return to the country.
After his fight against Yamanaka, in which he became the WBC super bantamweight champion, the JBC banned him indefinitely. However, he has been competing under other jurisdictions and has since lost his titles. His suspension comes to a rest as he is set to fight for the undisputed title against one of the biggest names in the sport this coming May.

In a recent turn of events, it is reported that his suspension by the JBC will be lifted before his fight against the current unified super bantamweight champion, Naoya Inoue. The source confirmed this news to ESPN’s Mike Coppinger, who, on his X post, revealed, “Luis Nery received an indefinite suspension from the Japan Boxing Commission in March 2018, but officials involved have been assured the Mexican will be reinstated for the undisputed title fight vs. Naoya Inoue in May in Tokyo, sources told ESPN.”

His 2018 suspension by the Japan Boxing Commission was taken less than 10 days after his win against the Shinsuke Yamanaka. It is important to understand that according to the commission guidelines, the punishment for missing the weight is a year of suspension. But then why the ban for life? Somehow it has again to do with a previous match involving Yamanaka.

The True Reason Behind the Indefinite Ban
Nery fought Shinsuke Yamanaka twice. The first time was back in August 2017. During their first face-off, the allegation was relatively more grave despite his winning the contest. He was stripped of his title by Ring Magazine and WBC for testing positive for a banned substance, namely zilpaterol. However, the WBC later contended that the positive test was due to contaminated food since the other two tests came back negative. After this, he was subsequently granted a rematch with Yamanaka, which he again won and became the WBC super bantamweight champion.
