Most boxers dare not speak of fighting Canelo Alvarez. However, that’s not the case for Andre Ward! The San Francisco native fought many formidable opponents in the span of his decorated career, including the likes of Sergey Kovalev. Yet, meeting the Mexican superstar was never in the cards for the undefeated champion. While appearing in a recent interview, Ward hinted at changing that fact.

While the boxing community is demanding a fight between David Benavidez and Canelo Alvarez, Ward has thrown his name in the mix to face Canelo. While appearing in an interview with Stephen A. Smith, the former champion took shots at Canelo’s resume while announcing his potential return to the ring.

Andre Ward has a problem with Canelo Alvarez

During the interview, Smith questioned Ward if he wished he was still active in the sport to face Canelo. As if the words were on the tip of his tongue, Andre suggested Canelo would not have wanted to fight him. When probed about his reasoning behind it, Ward stated, “My name was never mentioned with Canelo Alvarez until he fought a common opponent and he fought Sergey Kovalev.”

He went on to suggest that Canelo carefully picks his opponents while claiming ‘Cinnamon’ has earned his right to do so. However, later in the interview, the Oakland resident revealed that he does have a problem with Canelo. “The only problem I have is when we start mentioning his name with the all-time great fighters – I have a problem with that because I am looking at the resume,” said Ward.

Later, Smith questioned Ward about the possibility of coming out of retirement for a fight. Confidently, the 32-0 boxer claimed he definitely thinks about it. “Yeah, of course. I am hard-wired to compete,” said Ward. While Ward facing Canelo is a rather new development, Canelo Alvarez recently sent a message to all his critics.

Canelo claims it’s always the same with critiques

After Benavidez’s win over Demetrius Andrade, the Guadalajara native has been under constant fire. So, in a interview with Fight Hub TV, ‘Cinnamon’ sent a harsh reality check to everyone who claimed he is avoiding a fight against David Benavidez. During the interview, Canelo claimed it’s always the same thing with the people criticizing him.

“Yeah, it always happens; Lara, Trout, Mayweather, Coto, Golovkin, Jacobs. Everyone [was saying that] I didn’t want to fight with Callum Smith, with Billy Joe Saunders, at the end of the day I beat them, practically all of them,” said Canelo. Later in the interview, Canelo claimed if he beats Benavidez, people would come up with another fighter, pitting against him.
