So, when Mayweather’s Olympic teammate, Antonio Tarver, appeared in the final season of Mike Tyson’s Hotboxin podcast, Tyson’s co-host, DJ Who Kid, quickly popped the question about how Mayweather got the ‘Pretty Boy’ nickname. Here is what Tarver, the former world champion, had to say about the origins of Mayweather’s nickname.

Antonio Tarver claimed Floyd Mayweather was easy to spot

Answering Tyson’s co-host, Tarver revealed, “Well, yeah, the Olympic team and everything we [were] young out there. We [were] moving around the cities and shit, different cities, going to different places. I noticed Floyd, and he stood out.” It’s worth mentioning that Mayweather got the moniker because of his actions in the ring.

Before the Mayweather era, before the five-division champion turned pro and dominated the sport, he competed in the Olympics in the mid-90s. Mayweather used to come out of every fight unscathed with no damage to his face, which is why his teammates came up with the nickname ‘Pretty Boy.’ However, that’s not the only name Mayweather is known by! One of his other popular monikers is ‘Money’ Mayweather, and here’s how he got that one.

How did Floyd Mayweather get the ‘Money’ tag?

With Mayweather’s reputation and hefty bank balance, it’s not too difficult to guess why Mayweather is called ‘Money.’ However, the question is, Who came up with the nickname, fans know him for even today? The answer is – Mayweather himself. When the undefeated boxer grew older, he realized he needed to distance himself from the nickname.

So, he came with ‘Money.’ During a media-day workout interview in April 2012, Mayweather explained, “The nickname ‘Money’ came from when I was joking and throwing money into the camera, so it stuck with me.” Mayweather further added, “You can’t be a 35-year-old man calling yourself ‘Pretty Boy.” Moreover, it’s safe to say that the nickname suited him well, especially considering he went on to become the richest boxer in the history of the sport. According to several sources, Floyd Mayweather’s net worth is somewhere around $450 million.
